Its wood is valued not chiefly as heavy structural lumber but because it can be split into flexible strips for basketry and other woven or shaped products. Recognizing it takes more than one clue, and conservation claims should be tied to their date and region.
What is black ash?
Black ash is a small-to-medium ash native to eastern North America, including eastern Canada. It is also known as basket ash, swamp ash, brown ash, hoop ash and water ash. The names reflect its wetland habitat and notable craft uses, but common names can vary, so Fraxinus nigra is the clearest name when discussing the species.
It is associated with poorly drained swamps, bogs, wet woodlands and lowlands, as well as margins of streams and lakes. A tree’s height varies with site and conditions; size alone is not a reliable way to identify it.
How do I identify a black ash tree?
Look for a combination of leaf, branch, bark and seed clues. Black ash can resemble other ash species, and appearance changes with season, so use a regional botanical key for a confident identification rather than relying on one feature.
#1 Best Overall
- FRESH SEEDS: Arizona Ash grows up to 30 feet tall and has pretty spring flowers and vibrant green leaves.
- GROW OR GIFT: Comes in a nice seed packet with a color photo and directions for growing
- MADE IN USA: Buy with confidence from CZ Grain. You get authentic seeds and great customer service
- USE GOOD SOIL: All Natural Soil Like CZ Grain Soil, or Fox Farms Ocean Forest Soil is very good soil!
- Branching: Branches and leaves grow in opposite pairs.
- Leaves: The compound leaves typically have seven to eleven leaflets. The lateral leaflets are stalkless, attaching directly to the central leaf stem.
- Bark: Mature bark is pale gray and flaky.
- Seeds: The wing of the samara (the one-seeded, winged fruit) extends to the base of the seed cavity.
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service cautions that its fact-sheet description is not an identification key. When distinguishing black ash from another ash, compare several traits—including leaflet attachment and number, samara wing shape and bark texture—and check them against a key for your region.
What is black ash wood used for?
Black ash has strongly ring-porous wood that can be split into thin, flexible sheets. USDA NRCS explains that summer growth can be used for splint; soaking and pounding the wood helps separate it into strips. Its Plant Guide lists basketry splints, barrel hoops, snowshoe frames, canoe ribs and woven chair seats. Other documented uses include furniture, cabinets and interior finish.

The Forest Service describes the wood as easily split and widely used for baskets. Black ash is softer and lighter than white ash, so its special usefulness for splitting should not be mistaken for evidence that it is a heavy-duty structural wood or that all ash species behave alike.
A culturally specific basketmaking tradition
At Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site in Nova Scotia, Parks Canada describes black ash—called wisqoq in Mi’kmaw—as a prized material for Mi’kmaw basketmaking. This is a place- and community-specific account of a significant handcraft tradition, not a generic label for all basket weaving.

Is black ash threatened?
In Canada, COSEWIC designated black ash Threatened in 2018. That assessment reported that about 51% of the species’ global range was in Canada. It also estimated a 60-year generation time and projected that, under the climate assumptions then used, about 73% of the Canadian population could be affected by emerald ash borer within one generation. Those are figures and projections from the 2018 assessment, not a current census or a measured 2026 population change.
The assessment also projected mortality above 90% in affected contexts under its modeled scenario. That result was conditional on the assessment’s scope and assumptions; it should not be read as a measured mortality rate across Canada. No newer species-wide population count or decline rate is established by the sources cited here.

Why emerald ash borer and firewood matter
Emerald ash borer poses a conservation risk to ash trees. Canadian Food Inspection Agency material prepared for a 2025 consultation identifies the movement of untreated firewood by individuals as a possible major pathway for spreading the pest, while noting the challenge of early detection. Check current local rules before moving firewood; restrictions depend on location and can change.
What conservation work is documented?
Parks Canada reports collecting black ash seed for long-term preservation at the National Tree Seed Centre and planting seedlings at Kejimkujik. These are concrete conservation actions at that park, not evidence by themselves that the species has recovered across its range.
