There is no single best fertilizer for every garlic bed: the right choice depends on what your soil already contains. Start with a soil test, use its phosphorus and potassium results to choose a fertilizer, and time nitrogen for spring growth. The seven options below are categories for different conditions—not a ranking of tested brands.

How to choose fertilizer for garlic

Get a soil test before planting if possible. Garlic may need nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but the amounts already in your soil determine whether adding phosphorus or potassium makes sense. University of Minnesota Extension advises against repeated use of high-phosphorus fertilizer when soil phosphorus is already high; a low- or no-phosphorus product may be more appropriate in that situation. Minnesota Extension’s garlic guidance explains the soil-test approach.

Compare products by their N-P-K analysis, whether the soil test calls for phosphorus, how quickly their nitrogen becomes available, and whether they fit your preference for organic or conventional materials. Follow the label for application rate and method, and account for nutrients contributed by compost or manure.

7 fertilizer options for garlic

1. 10-10-10 granular fertilizer

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension gives 10-10-10 as a preplant fallback when a soil test is unavailable. That is Maine-specific guidance, not a universal rate or a reason to add phosphorus and potassium automatically. Avoid choosing it by default if your soil test shows those nutrients are already high. Maine’s garlic bulletin provides its recommendation and timing.

  • Supports Bulb Development & Plant Strength – Helps promote strong roots and consistent bulb formation throughout the season.
  • Balanced Nutrition for Growing Garlic – Designed to feed garlic plants without overstimulating leafy growth.
  • Ideal for Garden Beds & Raised Rows – Suitable for backyard gardens, raised beds, and seasonal planting.
  • Made in USA

2. Nitrogen-focused fertilizer

A nitrogen-focused product can supply spring nitrogen without adding as much phosphorus, if nitrogen is needed and the product’s analysis suits your soil. Choose the amount and timing from the soil-test recommendation and local growing guidance rather than applying a blanket rate.

3. Low-phosphorus fertilizer

When soil phosphorus is elevated but other nutrients are needed, a low-phosphorus formulation may help avoid adding more phosphorus than the bed requires. Check the full N-P-K analysis and let the soil test guide the choice.

4. No-phosphorus fertilizer

A fertilizer with no phosphorus is another option for high-phosphorus soil. It is not automatically the right choice for every bed: use the soil test to determine whether nitrogen, potassium, or other nutrients are needed.

True Organic Blood Meal – High-Nitrogen Organic Fertilizer for Rapid Vegetative Growth – 3lb Bag Covers 104 Sq. Ft.
  • Encourages Rapid Growth: True Organic Blood Meal is perfect for heavy feeders like corn, spinach, broccoli, and leafy greens, promoting vigorous vegetative growth.
  • High-Nitrogen Formula: A powerful natural source of nitrogen, ideal for boosting lush, green foliage and overall plant health.
  • Seasonal Application: Suitable for in-ground and container plants, apply twice annually in Spring and Fall for consistent results.
  • Organic and Sustainable: Made from all-natural ingredients, supporting both plants and soil without harmful chemicals.
  • Generous Coverage: A 3lb bag covers up to 104 sq. ft., making it a cost-effective choice for gardeners of all sizes.

5. Compost

Compost adds organic matter and can contribute nutrients, but its nutrient content varies. Rutgers and Minnesota describe organic matter as part of garlic-bed preparation; do not treat compost as a precise substitute for a fertilizer with a known N-P-K analysis unless its nutrient contribution is known. Rutgers’ home-garden garlic guidance covers soil preparation and fertilizer.

6. Aged manure

Aged manure can be used as an organic soil amendment, but its nutrient contribution varies with the material. Include it in your fertility plan rather than assuming it supplies a predictable amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium. Follow local guidance and avoid stacking it with fertilizer without accounting for the combined nutrients.

7. Fish-and-kelp foliar feed

Rutgers describes a spring fish-and-kelp foliar approach as an optional alternative. It is not established by the cited guidance as superior to other fertilizers or as a replacement for soil-test-based fertility. Follow the product label for dilution and application.

When to fertilize garlic

Before planting

Use the soil-test recommendation to address phosphorus and potassium before planting when needed. Maine’s 10-10-10 fallback applies only when no soil test is available; Maine also indicates that spring phosphorus and potassium are not needed under its guidance. Do not combine that recommendation with another region’s schedule as if they were one universal program.

During spring growth

Extension guidance generally places nitrogen in split applications during spring rather than applying all of it in fall. Maine suggests one application at emergence and a second two to three weeks later. Rutgers gives an example of applying nitrogen when plants are 6–8 inches tall. These are regional examples, not interchangeable dates for every climate.

Minnesota Extension advises against applying nitrogen after the first week in May in its local context. In other regions, use local extension advice and the fertilizer label to set timing. Slower-release materials may need to be applied earlier so nutrients become available during the crop’s growth window, as Maine’s April 24, 2025 Garlic IPM Newsletter notes.

Old Cobblers Farm Wicked Growth Garlic and Onion Fertilizer with Sulfur, Calcium, Boron and Zinc, Bulb Crop Plant Food for Onions, Shallots and Leeks (5 lbs | 10 lbs | 15 lbs | 20 lbs) (5lbs)
  • SULFUR FOR ALLIUM CHARACTER — Garlic and onions are sulfur-hungry crops; 3% guaranteed sulfur from gypsum and gradually oxidizing elemental sulfur feeds the compounds behind their pungency and character.
  • FULL GUARANTEED ANALYSIS — 5% ammoniacal nitrogen, 10% phosphate, and 10% potash plus 2% calcium for firm well-keeping bulbs and guaranteed boron and zinc for bulb formation and even development.
  • MADE FOR THE ALLIUM FAMILY — Feeds yellow, red, white, and sweet onions, green onions, hardneck and softneck garlic, elephant garlic, shallots, leeks, and chives in raised beds and rows, fall or spring plantings.
  • PRE-PLANT PLUS SIDE-DRESS — Mix 1/2 to 1 cup per 10 sq ft into the soil before planting, then side-dress 1/2 cup per 10 linear feet once tops are 4 to 6 inches tall, reapplying every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • STOP BEFORE HARVEST — End feeding 2 to 3 weeks before harvest so necks dry down and bulbs cure for storage; keep granules off foliage and bulb shoulders and water thoroughly after every application.

If you do not have a soil test

  1. Consider testing before the next planting so you can avoid unnecessary phosphorus or potassium applications.

  2. If you need to make a preplant choice now, treat Maine’s 10-10-10 recommendation as a regional fallback only—not a nationally applicable rate.

  3. For spring nitrogen, follow local extension timing and the product label; do not assume that a balanced fertilizer is needed for every application.

What the fertilizer evidence does—and does not—show

The cited extension sources support choosing fertilizer by soil conditions, applying nitrogen during spring growth, and avoiding unnecessary phosphorus. They do not compare seven commercial products, establish a brand that produces the largest bulbs, or identify a universal fertilizer rate. Treat the seven choices above as practical categories to evaluate, not as a performance ranking.
