If a household circuit loses power, turn off or unplug appliances on that circuit, then reset its breaker by moving the handle fully to OFF and back to ON. Try this once. If it will not reset, trips again, or you notice heat, a burning smell, discoloration, or flickering lights, leave it alone and contact a qualified electrician.

Before you reset the breaker

A breaker is a safety device that interrupts current when it exceeds a safe level. A trip is a signal to investigate, not a nuisance to override. Common causes include too many appliances on one circuit, a malfunctioning product, or a short circuit. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises investigating the cause rather than repeatedly resetting a breaker that trips. CPSC consumer safety information

  • Turn off or unplug appliances on the affected circuit before you try a reset.
  • Do not touch equipment that is hot, wet, damaged, or sparking.
  • Do not remove the panel cover, work on wiring, replace a breaker, or bypass its protection. This procedure is only for operating the breaker handle.

How to reset a tripped breaker

  1. Reduce the load. Turn off or unplug appliances on the affected circuit.
  2. Find the breaker. Check the panel’s circuit directory if it has one. A tripped handle may be fully OFF or may rest between ON and OFF; a handle position alone may not make the trip obvious. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission describes these possible positions in its CPSC Guide to Home Wiring Hazards.
  3. Move the handle fully to OFF, then to ON. If it is in an intermediate position, moving it all the way to OFF first is part of the reset. Do not force a stuck handle. ESFI’s guide to the home electrical system also describes the OFF-then-ON reset.
  4. Check what happens. If power returns, reconnect devices cautiously. Avoid running too many high-current appliances on the same circuit. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and arrange professional diagnosis.

When to stop and call an electrician

Do not make another reset attempt if the breaker will not stay on or trips again after the load is reduced. Leave it off and contact a qualified or licensed electrician to identify the cause; a recurring trip can point to an overload, a defective product, or a short circuit. ESFI and the CPSC advise getting professional help when the problem persists or the cause is uncertain.

Stop using the affected circuit and seek an electrician if you notice a burning odor, warm outlets, discolored switches, or flickering or dimming lights. ESFI lists these among signs of potentially serious electrical problems in its home safety guidance. Do not open the panel or attempt a wiring repair.

Use the panel directory to identify circuits

A clear directory can help you locate the right breaker when a circuit loses power. Labeling is an organizational aid, not a diagnosis or a fix for a breaker that keeps tripping. ESFI recommends labeling the panel in its home electrical system guidance.

This is general U.S.-oriented consumer guidance. Panel-specific manufacturer instructions and local requirements may differ; if you are unsure which breaker controls the circuit or how its handle operates, contact an electrician rather than opening the panel.
