A full-size built-in model can be rated near 9 kW overall, while an individual zone draws less at a normal setting and may have a higher temporary boost rating. To estimate electricity use, look beyond maximum watts: energy depends on the power actually used, for how long, and how many zones are active.
What wattage does an induction cooktop use?
Check the specification sheet or appliance nameplate for the exact model. A published wattage may describe one cooking zone, a boost setting or the total appliance rating; those figures are not interchangeable. ENERGY STAR product listings distinguish zone wattage, while manufacturers may publish separate normal and boost ratings.
For a specific example, LG Canada lists its CBIH3613BE built-in cooktop at 9,200 W total on 240 V, or 7,524 W on 208 V. Its center zone is rated at 2,400 W normally and 4,300 W with boost. Those are specifications for that Canadian model, not a universal range or a prediction of how much power it will draw throughout a meal. See LG’s CBIH3613BE specifications.
Watts and kilowatt-hours answer different questions
Watts measure power—the rate at which electricity is being used at a moment. A kilowatt-hour (kWh) measures energy used over time. A cooktop’s maximum rating therefore does not mean it draws that amount continuously for an entire cooking session: settings change, zones cycle or modulate, and multiple zones may be used at once.

Estimate energy for a cooking session
- Estimate the average power used during cooking in kilowatts. Divide watts by 1,000; for example, 2,000 W is 2 kW.
- Multiply that average power by the time used in hours. For example, 2 kW for half an hour is 1 kWh.
- For an approximate electricity cost, multiply the kWh by your own electricity rate per kWh.
The example is a calculation, not a measured typical cooking session. The sources do not establish a universal per-meal usage or household cost. Actual energy depends on the settings, duration and active zones, so using a zone’s maximum or boost rating for the whole session can overstate consumption.
Use annual kWh carefully
ENERGY STAR’s product criteria report annual energy consumption using an estimate of 418 cooking events per year, averaging 31 minutes each—about eight events a week—and note that actual consumption varies with usage patterns. This standardized estimate can help compare listed products on a common basis, but it is not a personalized bill forecast. Read ENERGY STAR’s induction cooktop criteria.

- PORTABLE INDUCTION BURNER: Duxtop induction cooktop uses 110/120 V 15 amp electrical outlet–standard in all North American homes. ETL listed and built to North American electrical standards. It is lightweight and compact for easy handling and storage
- Choose from 20 preset power levels (100 to 1800 W) and 20 preset temperature level settings (100 °F to 460 °F). With an 83% energy efficiency, induction burner is more efficient than traditional gas or electric stoves
- DIGITAL LCD SENSOR: Touch control panel: child safety lock keeps the cooking and timer settings from being accidentally changed once they have been set; fast boil button; keep warm button (for 1-30 minutes at 140 °F); up to 10-hour timer button
- Induction stoves rely on cookware to heat, so it’s essential to choose magnetic bottom cookware with a minimum diameter of 5 inches. Auto-pan detection will shut off automatically after 60 seconds if no cookware, or the incorrect cookware is detected
- Although induction itself is a noiseless process, there may be high pitched sounds from the cookware due to multiple layers of metals sandwiched together. Please allow the induction cooker to cool down before cleaning
Check electrical requirements before installation
For a built-in replacement or new installation, compare the exact cooktop’s voltage, amperage and installation instructions with the available electrical supply. The same LG Canada model is listed for 208/240 V, 60 Hz, with current ratings of 36.2 A at 208 V and 38.4 A at 240 V. LG calls for a dedicated circuit and installation by a qualified electrician. These requirements are specific to that model and are not a substitute for checking the applicable product instructions and local installation requirements.
ENERGY STAR’s product criteria include manufacturer-reported voltage, amperage, installation type and technology. Compare these details—not wattage alone—when evaluating a cooktop. ENERGY STAR product criteria.

Efficiency figures do not predict your bill
Induction uses an electromagnetic coil to create a magnetic field that heats compatible cookware. Efficiency describes how much supplied energy becomes useful cooking heat under a particular method; it is not the cooktop’s maximum input wattage or your electricity cost.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR 2021–2022 award information gives approximate cooking-top efficiencies of 32% for gas, 75–80% for conventional electric resistance and about 85% for induction. It also characterizes induction as about 5–10% more efficient per unit than conventional electric resistance and about three times as efficient as gas. These are broad comparisons from that award information, not guarantees for every appliance, recipe or household bill. Read the ENERGY STAR 2021–2022 award information.

A different figure comes from the European Commission: newly sold electric hobs in 2020 averaged 78.3% efficiency and 231 kWh annual consumption. That is a separate population and reporting context, not a universal benchmark to combine with the ENERGY STAR figures. See the European Commission’s electric hob information.
Confirm your cookware is induction-compatible
Induction needs cookware with a magnetic base. LG lists magnetic stainless steel, cast iron and some enameled steel as suitable examples. The base should be flat and appropriately sized for the zone; cookware size, material and base shape affect heating performance. Look for “induction-ready” or “IH” labeling, then check the cooktop instructions for compatibility and sizing guidance. LG’s product information includes cookware guidance.
Quick Recap
What to compare when choosing a cooktop
- Power ratings: Check total appliance watts and zone watts, and identify any rating that applies only to boost.
- Electrical supply: Confirm the model’s voltage, amperage, circuit and installation requirements against the product instructions and local needs.
- Annual energy: Compare kWh figures only when their test assumptions and reporting context are comparable.
- Cookware fit: Confirm that your pans have suitable magnetic bases and sizes for the zones.
