For ordinary hexagonal fasteners, the familiar socket profile has six internal gripping flats. These are called six-point sockets. Twelve-point sockets are also common, but available standards and catalogs do not quantify which profile accounts for more sockets sold, so “most” is best understood as the conventional choice rather than a measured market majority.
What does “gripping flats” mean on a socket?
The gripping flats are the contact surfaces inside the socket that fit around a fastener. A typical hexagonal bolt head or nut has six sides, so a six-point socket has six internal gripping flats to match it.
SAE International’s MA4534 listing describes hand sockets designed to mate with hexagon (six-point) fasteners. The standard’s description concerns the tool-fastener fit; it is not a survey of socket sales.

The fit and use guidance above reflect the standards and manufacturer catalog descriptions, not independent performance testing. SAE’s AS954H listing identifies a twelve-point, high-strength, thin-wall hand wrench standard and records a revision dated March 20, 2023. Teng Tools’ 2024–2025 catalog includes both profiles.

Which profile should you use?
- For a standard hexagonal bolt or nut: a six-point socket matches the fastener’s six-sided shape.
- When repositioning room is limited: Teng Tools presents twelve-point sockets as helpful when more frequent repositioning is useful. Check that the socket profile matches the fastener.
- When choosing a set: a socket wrench set can include six-point sockets, or a mix of six- and twelve-point sockets. SATA’s 2024 catalog lists sets with both profiles; the catalog evidence does not establish a particular set as best.
Buying a set is optional; the important first check is that the socket fits the fastener’s profile and size.

No sales-share figure is established by the cited SAE standards or manufacturer catalogs. They confirm that six-point sockets are a conventional profile for hexagonal fasteners and that twelve-point sockets are also available, but they do not show what percentage of sockets on the market use either design.
