Yes—but only use a jar whose manufacturer says that exact product is freezer-safe or that is specifically made for freezing. Ordinary glass jars, including many reused commercial-food jars, can break in the freezer. Leave room for food to expand, avoid sudden temperature changes, and follow the jar maker’s instructions for the container and closure.
Which glass jars are suitable for freezing?
Choose a freezer-rated jar rather than assuming that any glass jar will work. The National Center for Home Food Preservation recommends wide-mouth jars designed for both freezing and canning and warns that regular glass jars break easily at freezer temperatures. UC Cooperative Extension likewise advises against ordinary glass, including commercial product jars.
Wide-mouth, straight-sided jars are practical choices: extension guidance recommends this shape, and it can make frozen contents easier to remove. Before filling a jar, check the maker’s freezer rating, intended closure, capacity, fill line or headspace instructions, and handling guidance.
Manufacturer guidance is specific to the product
- WECK: Its FAQ identifies Mold, Mini Mold, and Quadro jars as freezer-safe when used with a Keep Fresh Cover. Follow its instructions, including leaving 1–1.5 inches of headspace.
- Pyrex: The cited Pyrex guidance applies to its borosilicate glass products, not automatically to every item sold under the brand. It also warns that chips or notches can weaken products.
- Le Parfait: Its FAQ permits freezing in specified Super and Familia Wiss jars and terrines when they are not overfilled and hot preparations are avoided. It excludes other products, including bottles.
These examples are not blanket approvals for every jar or lid from the same manufacturer. Check the instructions for the exact product you own.

How much headspace should you leave?
Food expands as it freezes, so an overfilled jar can crack. Use the fill line or headspace stated by the jar manufacturer when available. Guidance varies with jar shape and use; these figures are not interchangeable universal rules:

How to freeze food in a glass jar safely
- Check the jar and closure. Confirm that the exact jar is freezer-safe and that its cover or lid is approved for the intended use. Do not use chipped or damaged glass.
- Use a suitable shape. Prefer a wide-mouth, straight-sided freezer-rated jar where available; avoid ordinary reused food jars unless their maker explicitly approves them for freezing.
- Cool hot food first. Do not put hot food into a jar and move it straight into the freezer. WECK specifically advises cooling food before freezing.
- Leave the stated headspace. Follow the product’s fill line or manufacturer directions. If following a published extension figure, make sure it matches the jar style and use described in that guidance.
- Freeze and thaw without abrupt temperature changes. WECK cautions against moving a frozen jar directly into a microwave or hot water. Follow the jar maker’s instructions for thawing and reheating.
Can you freeze food in a regular glass jar?
It is not recommended unless the manufacturer identifies that exact jar as freezer-safe. Regular glass jars, including many commercial food jars, may break at freezer temperatures. If you cannot verify a freezer rating, choose a container specifically designed for freezing instead.

- An explicit freezer rating for the exact product, not just the brand.
- A wide-mouth, straight-sided shape where practical.
- The maker’s headspace or fill-line guidance for the jar’s capacity and use.
- A compatible closure and clear instructions for freezing, thawing, and reheating.
