A humidistat can help regulate output, but a separate room hygrometer can measure humidity if the unit lacks one. Reduce output or stop humidifying if you see condensation on windows or dampness on walls, floors, or other materials; excess moisture can encourage biological growth. - Rinse thoroughly if you use a cleaning agent. The EPA advises several changes of tap water so cleaning chemicals are not dispersed during operation.
- Watch the room as well as the device. Keep humidity at or below 50% while humidifying and reduce output or stop if condensation or damp materials appear.
What water should you use?
Low-mineral water can reduce scale and the dispersal of minerals, particularly with ultrasonic and impeller units. The CDC says distilled or boiled-and-cooled water can further reduce germ growth.
