In gardening, “power shears” usually means electric hand pruning shears: a powered tool for making individual branch cuts. They are not electric hedge shears, which clip many small shoots to shape a formal hedge. Electric pruning shears are most useful when you make many suitable cuts and want powered assistance; they are not a substitute for choosing the right tool for each branch and task.
Are electric pruning shears worth it?
They may be worth considering when repeated hand-pruner cuts make a regular pruning job tiring or slow. For occasional pruning, a well-maintained manual pruner may be simpler. First consider the amount of work, the branch sizes and wood you expect to cut, and whether you need selective cuts or hedge shaping. Iowa State University Extension advises choosing tools according to the plant material’s size and the situation.
Choose by the job, not the label
- Electric hand pruning shears: make individual cuts on branches within the tool’s stated capacity.
- Manual bypass pruners: suit selective cuts on live stems, especially for occasional jobs. A bypass action uses two blades that pass one another and can make a clean cut when sharp and properly used.
- Loppers: provide longer handles for branches too large for hand pruners but still suited to a lopper’s capacity.
- Pruning saw: is the appropriate next tool for branches beyond the capacity of pruners or loppers.
- Hedge shears: clip many small shoots to shape a hedge; they are not for selective pruning or large branches.
For hazardous high branches or pruning near power lines, do not attempt the work yourself; Iowa State Extension advises contacting a trained arborist.
What should you compare when buying?
Branch size, wood and cut quality
Estimate the diameter and type of branches you will actually prune, then compare that work with the manufacturer’s stated capacity. Do not infer cutting capacity from price or motor power. For selective pruning of live wood, look for a bypass or scissor-style cut and a tool that leaves the remaining stem smooth rather than crushed. A stated maximum is a specification, not proof that every cut at that diameter will be easy in every kind of wood.

Weight, balance and hand fit
Check the weight of the complete working setup, not just the hand piece. Consider your grip, hand size, whether the tool suits your handedness, and where its battery or power pack sits. A tool that is manageable for a few cuts may feel different over a long session.
Battery and package contents
Confirm whether the listing is a complete kit or only the pruner hand piece. Check whether the battery, charger, power pack and carrying equipment are included, and whether the battery capacity and runtime information fit your intended workload. Do not compare prices as if hand-piece-only and complete-kit listings were equivalent.

Replacement parts, service and warranty
Before buying, check whether blades and other wear parts can be replaced, whether service is available where you live, and what maintenance the manufacturer specifies. Match replacement parts to the exact model. Read warranty coverage for the tool and its battery, charger or power pack separately; terms and conditions can differ.
A documented example: FELCO 822
FELCO North America’s current product listing describes the FELCO 822 as an electric pruning shear with a maximum cutting diameter of 1.77 inches (45 mm). The manufacturer lists the kit as including a 880/196 battery and 882-NP power pack, and gives the kit weight as 6.07 lb. FELCO also lists an 822-HP hand-piece-only option, so check the package contents before comparing listings. Its 820/1 replacement blade listing identifies compatibility with the FELCO 820 and 822. FELCO’s warranty and repairs page lists 24 months for the 822 tool subject to its stated conditions; battery, charger and power-pack coverage has separate rules. Confirm current, region-specific terms with the seller or manufacturer.
Use and maintain powered shears safely
- Read and follow the manual for the exact model. Inspect the tool before use, and treat the blade and closing mechanism as hazards.
- Stay within the manufacturer’s stated cutting capacity and use a tool appropriate to the branch and task.
- Do not use hedge shears for selective pruning or large branches.
- Assess hazards and use protective equipment appropriate to the work. Do not prune hazardous high branches or work near power lines yourself.
- After cutting diseased plant parts, disinfect tools. Clean and dry them before storage, and maintain or sharpen them according to the manufacturer’s directions.

How to make the choice
- List the plants and branch sizes you prune most often, and separate selective branch removal from hedge shaping.
- Decide whether the volume of suitable cuts justifies powered assistance or whether manual pruners are enough.
- Compare stated capacity, cut mechanism, complete-tool weight, hand fit and where the battery is carried.
- Verify exactly what the price includes, then check compatible replacement parts, service availability and separate warranty terms.
- Choose a different tool when branches exceed the pruner’s capacity or the work presents a hazard.
