There is no supported “best surge protector” recommendation for a hair dryer. A surge protector is not a way to make a dryer safe on a power strip or to increase the electrical capacity available to it. Use the connection specified in the dryer’s manual and check the ratings of the dryer and any permitted cord or temporary power strip. For shock protection if a dryer contacts water, look for a hand-supported dryer with an integral immersion-protection plug; that is a different safety feature from surge protection.
Why a surge protector is not the answer
Surge protection addresses voltage surges. It does not prevent a circuit overload, and it does not make an otherwise unsuitable connection safe. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) explains that power strips and surge suppressors provide more access to the same limited circuit capacity, not more power. Its guidance also distinguishes a plain power strip from a surge protector: “Power strips do NOT provide surge protection.” ESFI’s surge-protection guidance does not establish that a surge protector is an appropriate connection device for a hair dryer.
For that reason, this is not a ranked list of surge protectors. Whether a particular dryer can be connected through an accessory depends on the dryer’s instructions and the accessory’s rating; the evidence here does not establish a universal compatible wattage, amperage, or product model.
What protects a hand-supported hair dryer from immersion shock?
Many hand-supported hair dryers have an integral circuit interrupter in the plug, designed to reduce shock risk if the appliance is immersed in or otherwise contacts water. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says: “The Commission has determined that hand-supported hair dryers that are not equipped with integral immersion protection are a substantial product hazard.” Read the CPSC’s hand-supported hair dryer FAQ for its explanation of this protection.

Labels for this kind of protection may use terms such as ALCI, GFCI, or IDCI. Check the plug and the dryer’s manual rather than relying on a product description alone. This integral feature addresses shock risk from water contact; surge protection addresses voltage surges. Neither makes it safe to use a dryer near water, and an external surge protector is not a substitute for the dryer’s own immersion protection.
How to choose a safe connection
- Start with the dryer’s instructions and rating. Read the label and manual for the appliance’s electrical requirements and connection guidance. Do not assume that a power strip or extension cord is permitted.
- If an accessory is permitted, compare its rating with the appliance. ESFI advises matching a cord or temporary power strip rating to the appliance wattage and not using a cord rated below the appliance. Check the actual ratings of both products; there is no one wattage limit that can be applied to every dryer and accessory. See ESFI’s extension-cord safety tips.
- Do not chain accessories. Avoid connecting power strips or other plug-outlet accessories to one another. More outlets do not increase circuit capacity.
- Follow local requirements and the product’s intended setting. The guidance here does not verify the requirements for a particular dryer, building, or jurisdiction. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and applicable local electrical rules.
CPSC distinguishes extension cords from power strips and surge protectors; these are not interchangeable product categories. Its extension-cord and power-strip guidance also describes shock and fire risks associated with faulty products. In that 1999 release, CPSC cited about 7,100 fires involving electrical cords and plugs in 1996, resulting in 120 deaths, and more than 12,000 emergency-room-treated electrical burns and shocks in 1997. Those are historical figures for the stated years, not current annual estimates.

Check warnings for specific hair-dryer brushes
On August 6, 2026, CPSC warned consumers to stop using identified hair-dryer brushes sold by DEISNGB and through TikTok Shop because the products lacked integrated immersion protection and presented electrocution and shock hazards. This warning applies to the products it identifies; it does not establish that every hair-dryer brush is unsafe. Read the CPSC warning and follow its instructions if you own one of those products.
