For a 1,500-square-foot home, the right humidifier depends less on the headline square-foot rating than on whether you want to humidify one open area or the whole house, and whether your home has compatible ducted HVAC. A portable evaporative console such as the AIRCARE MA1201 is self-contained; a whole-house unit such as the AprilAire 500 connects to the HVAC system. Their published coverage figures are manufacturer claims based on differing assumptions, not comparable independent test results.
First decide what you want to humidify
One open area: choose a portable console
A portable evaporative console sits inside the living space and adds moisture to the air around it. The AIRCARE MA1201 is listed by its manufacturer for coverage up to 3,600 square feet and includes an MAF1 SuperWick. That figure is a manufacturer coverage claim; it does not establish that the unit will maintain the same humidity in every room, especially behind closed doors. Plan for a suitable open placement, regular refilling, and wick replacement.
The whole house: consider an HVAC-integrated unit
Ducted whole-house humidifiers use a home’s heating and ventilation system to distribute humidified air. Bypass, fan-powered, and steam are among the types Carrier identifies. They are not standalone plug-in replacements for a console: selection depends on the HVAC configuration as well as home size, climate, and desired humidity. Carrier specifically cautions against choosing solely by square footage. See Carrier’s guidance on choosing a home humidifier and its overview of whole-house humidifiers.
How the published models compare
The figures below come from manufacturer pages. Coverage and moisture capacity are different measures, and the sources do not establish common independent test conditions across products. Treat them as screening information, not a direct ranking.

| Model or category | Manufacturer-published figure | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| AIRCARE MA1201 portable evaporative console | Up to 3,600 sq. ft.; MAF1 SuperWick included (AIRCARE product page) | Self-contained; placement, refilling, wick changes, and airflow between rooms affect practical coverage. |
| AprilAire 500 HVAC-integrated small bypass evaporative humidifier | AprilAire’s FAQ says usually suitable for homes up to 1,500 sq. ft. and up to about 11 gallons per day (AprilAire FAQ, 2021). Its product page separately states up to 3,600 sq. ft. in tightly constructed homes and 12 gallons per day (current product page; no publication year stated). | Requires compatible ducted HVAC. The FAQ and product page do not provide shared conditions that reconcile their different coverage claims. |
| AprilAire 300 self-contained whole-house evaporative humidifier | Up to 1,950 sq. ft. in average-constructed homes and 13 gallons per day (AprilAire product page; no publication year stated) | Compare its placement and distribution needs with an HVAC-connected system; coverage assumes average construction. |
| Honeywell Home HE365 fan-powered whole-home evaporative humidifier | Up to 17.5 gallons per day and maximum building volume of 19,000 cubic feet (Honeywell Home product page; no publication year stated) | Fan-powered HVAC system; verify fit, controls, installation, and maintenance for the specific home. |
| Honeywell Home HE360 fan-powered humidifier | Up to 4,500 sq. ft. (Honeywell Home product page; no publication year stated) | Manufacturer coverage figure; confirm HVAC compatibility and installation requirements. |
| Carrier whole-house humidifier range | Carrier describes capacities ranging from 11.5 to 34 gallons per day (Carrier product page; no publication year stated) | Range covers multiple product types; match the particular unit to the HVAC system and home conditions. |

Why the AprilAire 500 has two different coverage figures
AprilAire’s FAQ, on a page dated 2021, says the Model 500 can add up to about 11 gallons of humidity daily and is “usually good for homes up to 1,500 sq. ft.” The current Model 500 product page instead advertises coverage up to 3,600 square feet for tightly constructed homes and capacity of 12 gallons per day. Both are company-published claims. Because the pages do not give shared test conditions, they cannot be reconciled into one universal coverage number; use the construction qualifier and confirm suitability for your home with the installer or manufacturer.

What to check before choosing
- Distribution: A console in an open area and a duct-connected unit distribute moisture differently. Consider the layout, closed rooms, and where the humidifier can be installed or placed.
- Home and climate: Square footage alone does not account for construction tightness, local climate, or the humidity level you want. Carrier identifies these, along with the HVAC system, as selection factors.
- HVAC fit: For a ducted whole-house model, have a qualified HVAC professional assess compatibility, controls, and installation requirements. The examples here do not establish that a particular model fits every system.
- Upkeep: Compare how often a portable unit needs water and a replacement wick with the maintenance required by an HVAC-integrated system.
- Capacity versus coverage: Gallons per day and square-foot ratings are not interchangeable. Do not rank unlike humidifier types by either number alone.
Refills and replacement parts matter
The MA1201 includes an MAF1 SuperWick, but the manufacturer listing does not establish a replacement interval. Check the unit’s instructions for care and replacement guidance. For AprilAire equipment, the company describes its water panel as a replaceable evaporative element and says replacement parts must match the exact humidifier model. Confirm the model number before ordering a panel or other part in AprilAire’s FAQ.
