There is no single best waterproof adhesive for every shower. For setting ceramic wall tiles, choose an adhesive whose current local technical data sheet approves the substrate and the shower’s level of wetting. For example, Palace Aqua-Tile is specified for shower walls exposed to frequent wetting, but not total immersion; Sika specifies its waterproof wall tile adhesive for shower areas when used with Sika wall tile grout. These are documented examples, not independently tested overall winners.
Most importantly, tile adhesive, under-tile waterproofing and sanitary silicone do different jobs. A product described as waterproof does not, by itself, make the complete shower waterproof.
What adhesive should I use for shower tiles?
For ceramic wall tiles, use a wall tile adhesive specifically approved for the wall substrate and the intended shower exposure. Read the product’s current local technical data sheet rather than relying on a general “waterproof” label. Check whether it allows frequent wetting, whether it requires a particular grout, and how long the installation must dry before water contact.
The examples below illustrate why the exact product instructions matter. Their stated coverage, open times and curing guidance come from different manufacturer documents and should not be treated as results from a comparable performance test.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent head-to-head test results. In particular, do not assume a wall adhesive is suitable for a shower floor simply because it is suitable for shower walls.
Tile adhesive, waterproofing and silicone: three different jobs
Tile adhesive bonds the tile
Tile adhesive fixes the tile to its substrate. The examples above are documented as wall products; do not use them on a shower floor unless the current product instructions explicitly approve that application.

Under-tile waterproofing protects the assembly
A waterproofing layer beneath tile is a separate part of the installation. Sikalastic WP 668 is documented in the GCC market as a flexible coating for internal wet areas, including showers. Its data sheet excludes permanently immersed or pressurized conditions. Its suitability depends on the substrate, installation details and compatibility with the rest of the system; follow current local instructions.
Sanitary silicone seals flexible joints
Sanitary silicone is used at flexible joints around showers, baths and fixtures. It is not a substitute for tile adhesive or concealed waterproofing. Sika Forever in the UK and Bostik Shower Seal in New Zealand are examples of bathroom joint sealants; their product details and availability are market-specific.

How to choose the right shower tile adhesive
- Identify the job. Decide whether you are setting tiles, sealing a flexible joint, or waterproofing beneath tiles. Choose a product made for that job.
- Confirm wall or floor approval. Check the current product sheet for the exact application. A shower-wall specification does not establish floor suitability.
- Check the wetting limit. Look for wording that matches the exposure, such as intermittent wetting, frequent wetting or continuous immersion. Those terms are not interchangeable.
- Match the substrate. Confirm the adhesive is approved for the actual wall build-up and that the surface is sound, clean and prepared as directed.
- Check system requirements. Follow the specified grout and any waterproofing-system instructions. For example, Sika specifies its wall adhesive for shower areas with Sika wall tile grout, while Palace calls for waterproof grout in intermittently wet areas.
- Plan the installation around working and drying times. Use the chosen product’s open time, cure instructions and water-contact waiting period. Do not substitute another product’s figures.
- Verify local product information. Formulations, standards and instructions can vary by country. Check the current local technical and safety data sheets before starting.
Application details that affect the result
Prepare the substrate as specified
Start with a sound, clean surface and meet the product’s requirements for dryness and preparation. Instructions can differ by substrate, so follow the chosen adhesive’s current sheet for the actual wall build-up rather than applying one product’s preparation guidance to another.
Use the specified trowel and bedding method
Spread adhesive with the notched trowel and bed the tiles as directed to achieve the required contact. Palace specifies a 5 mm × 5 mm notch for Aqua-Tile; that notch size is product-specific and should not be carried over to another adhesive without its instructions.

Allow the full stated time before water exposure
Drying and cure periods depend on the product and conditions. Palace’s sheet calls for 14 days before water contact after installing its adhesive and grout. Sika Forever silicone instructions say to wait 24 hours before using the bath or shower. These are instructions for those named products, not general waiting times for all shower installations.

When the job is sealing a joint rather than fixing tile, select a sanitary silicone whose instructions fit the joint and the surfaces. Check its compatible materials, movement capability, mould-resistance claims, colour, joint dimensions, surface-preparation requirements and cure time. Clean and dry the surfaces, prepare the joint, and tool the sealant within the product’s stated working window.

Sika Forever’s UK instructions state an approximate cure depth of 2–3 mm in 24 hours at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, and a 24-hour wait before bath or shower use. Those figures apply to the stated product and conditions. Sika’s product page describes mould-resistance testing using 10 years of simulated ageing; that is a vendor test claim, not a guarantee of ten years of real-world service.
Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Treating “waterproof” as proof the whole shower is waterproof. Adhesive, under-tile waterproofing and joint sealant serve separate functions.
- Using a wall product on a floor without approval. Check the product sheet for the specific surface and application.
- Assuming frequent wetting means immersion approval. Palace Aqua-Tile’s documented shower use excludes total immersion.
- Ignoring grout or system instructions. A specified grout or compatible waterproofing system may be part of the documented application.
- Relying on an old or foreign-market sheet as current local guidance. The cited Sika adhesive sheet is from 2018 and the examples span different markets. Verify the current local documentation.
