It can redirect a line or form part of a purchase system—but the right block depends on whether the job is industrial lifting, winch pulling or another application. This guide is for construction and rigging readers; the cited government guidance covers New South Wales and New Zealand, and local requirements differ. A recovery block is not automatically suitable for lifting.
What a snatch block does—and what it does not
The opening side plate allows a rope to be placed in the block without threading it from the rope end. Once reeved, the block can change the line’s direction or be used in a purchase arrangement. The block, rope, attachments and overall setup must all be suitable for the actual task.
For lifting concrete elements or rotating panels, SafeWork NSW says the block should be designed for power operation, typically with a roller bearing. That guidance does not make every snatch block—or every recovery block—appropriate for powered lifting.
How to choose a block for your wire rope and load
Do not choose by appearance or a generic rule of thumb. Check the block’s current manufacturer documentation and confirm that the marked rating and specifications suit the actual application and load path. If the arrangement or load assessment is uncertain, get a qualified rigging assessment.

#1 Best Overall
- Heavy Duty Chain: Upgrade to a 2-foot G80 snatch block chain. Built with high-strength alloy and heat-treated for added durability, it’s wear-resistant and shock-resistant. The galvanized surface resists oxidation, making it ideal for extreme environments.
- 4400 lbs Lifting Power: This snatch block pulley provides a heavy-duty working load of 4400 lbs (2T) and a break load of 10,000 lbs (4.5T). The 2.9 inch pulley easily handles heavy lifting, ideal for towing, winching, vehicle transport, and hauling tough loads.
- Flexible Usage Angles: The snatch block with hook features a 180° swivel ring, letting you adjust the angle of pull to suit tight spots. The 360° rotating hook helps you lift more efficiently, reducing strain and improving lifting power.
- Smooth & Stable Lifting: Crafted from high-strength alloy steel, this winch pulley resists wear and fatigue. The smooth-operating bearings ensure stable lifting, while the groove design keeps the rope centered and avoids slipping, making every lift more efficient.
- Easy to Use: Open the side panel of the pulley block and simply thread the lifting rope through—no more struggling to get the rope in place. It works with 3/8-inch cables, and you can easily inspect or swap out the rope as needed. One-person operation made easy!
- Intended duty: Confirm whether the block is designed for lifting, pulling/recovery or another use. Do not assume approval for one duty carries over to another.
- Rated capacity: Check the marked working load limit (WLL) and verify that the specific configuration is within its rating. The WLL on a product is not a substitute for assessing the complete rigging arrangement.
- Rope compatibility: Match the specified wire-rope diameter and the sheave groove to the rope being used. A block that does not suit the rope is not a valid choice simply because its WLL seems adequate.
- Operation and alignment: For powered work, verify that the block is designed for power operation and use it in the configuration for which it is rated. Avoid side loading.
- Attachment and condition: Check the attachment fitting and the block’s side plate or gate, retaining pin, sheave, pin and bearing. Do not use equipment that is damaged, incorrectly secured or not functioning freely.
Green Pin’s product page illustrates the kind of manufacturer specifications to compare, including WLL and wire-rope diameter by variant. Treat those details as product-specific information, not an endorsement or a universal recommendation; confirm the current data for the exact block you are considering.
How to use and inspect a snatch block safely
- Check the block before use. SafeWork NSW advises inspecting a snatch block before use and ensuring that its gate is properly closed. WorkSafe New Zealand’s rigging code identifies inspection points including corrosion, deformation, sheave and pin wear, free sheave movement, and retaining-pin function. It also calls for a permanently marked WLL and unique identifying number. These are source-specific guidance points, not a statement of legal requirements in every jurisdiction.
- Reeve and align it as instructed. Follow the exact manufacturer’s reeving instructions and use the block in its rated configuration. Kulkoni’s manufacturer catalog warns against side loading; also keep clear of pinch points and the line of force.
- Maintain it according to its instructions. SafeWork NSW calls for regular servicing and greasing before a new setup. It warns that friction from ungreased sheaves can raise system loads. Follow the maintenance schedule and lubricant guidance for the particular block.
- Remove damaged equipment from service. Kulkoni’s catalog directs users to remove cracked or deformed blocks from service. Do not return a damaged block to use based on a visual workaround; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local procedures.
SafeWork NSW’s guidance applies in New South Wales. WorkSafe New Zealand’s cited Load-Lifting Rigging Code of Practice is its fifth edition, described as an older publication; check its current status and local requirements before relying on it for compliance decisions. Kulkoni’s cited catalog is dated 2020, so consult the instructions for the exact block in use.

What “best” means for this job
There is no single best snatch block for every rigging task. A suitable choice is one whose intended duty, marked WLL, rope compatibility, operating configuration and condition all match the job, as confirmed in current manufacturer documentation. If you cannot verify any of those points, do not put the block into service for that setup.
Quick Recap
