The right bedroom alarm depends on what reliably wakes you and what helps you wind down: choose a conventional sound alarm for simplicity, or a sunrise clock if you want gradual light—with an audible backup if missing your wake time is not an option. No alarm clock can guarantee that you will wake feeling refreshed, and evidence that sunrise clocks improve sleep or overall health remains limited.
How sunrise alarm clocks work—and what they can’t promise
A sunrise alarm gradually brightens before the set wake time to imitate dawn. Many combine that light with an audible alarm, optional nature sounds, and a sunset mode that dims the light at bedtime. These features change the waking experience; they are not proof of better sleep or health outcomes. Sleep Foundation says evidence for those broader benefits is limited in its 2026 sunrise-clock guide.
Do not assume a sunrise clock is a medical light-therapy device. The Guardian’s UK roundup distinguishes sunrise alarms from light-therapy products and notes that only some clocks are bright enough for that purpose: its January 29, 2025 guide.
Choose the wake-up method that fits your needs
Sound alarm: straightforward and familiar
A conventional alarm wakes you with sound and is a sensible choice if you do not want a light routine, app, or connected features. Compare whether the clock offers a sound you can tolerate, a volume range that suits your room, and controls you can operate easily when sleepy.

#1 Best Overall
- Digital alarm clock with a 0.7-inch green LED display for easily checking the time at a glance
- Built-in nightlight gently illuminates a dark room
- Repeating snooze function makes it possible to sleep a little longer
- AC powered with integrated power supply. Batteries may be used as a backup power source to ensure time and alarms are retained in memory for 8 hours (refer to User Manual for details)
- Measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 inches (LxWxH); weighs 0.4 pounds (6.6 oz) Note: Batteries are not included
Gradual light: a gentler transition for some sleepers
A sunrise clock may suit someone who prefers a gradual brightening to an abrupt alarm. Check how long the light takes to ramp up and whether its brightness can be adjusted. Light alone may not wake everyone; if you are a heavy sleeper or cannot risk missing a wake time, select a model with an audible alarm as backup. Sleep Foundation makes the same practical distinction in its 2026 buying guide.
Light and sound together: a practical middle ground
A combined clock offers a gradual visual cue plus sound if the light is not enough. For example, Philips lists the SmartSleep Wake-up Light HF3505/01 with light-based waking, two natural sounds, FM radio, and bedside-lamp functionality. Philips says the selected sound rises to its chosen volume over one and a half minutes; that is the manufacturer’s feature description, not an independent reliability test.

Compare the features that affect everyday use
- Audible backup and alarm controls: For a must-not-miss wake time, verify that sound can accompany the light and that alarm settings are clear and dependable for your routine.
- Sunrise timing and brightness: Check the ramp duration and whether brightness is adjustable. A longer, dimmer transition and a shorter, brighter one are different experiences, so choose controls that match your preference.
- Night display: Look for a display that dims sufficiently for your bedroom, or can be turned off if you prefer darkness.
- Wind-down features: Sunset dimming, sleep sounds, or a night light may be useful if you want one device for bedtime as well as waking. Treat these as convenience features, not health guarantees.
- Setup and connectivity: A stand-alone clock avoids app and Wi-Fi dependence. A connected model may offer more programs, but check what requires a smartphone, internet connection, or paid subscription.
- Footprint and placement: Confirm the clock fits your bedside surface and that its light and controls work from where you plan to place it.

A quick way to narrow your choice
- Start with reliability. If you cannot risk sleeping through the alarm, choose audible backup rather than relying on light alone.
- Decide whether gradual light matters. If not, a simple sound alarm avoids paying for features you will not use. If it does, compare brightness controls and ramp timing.
- Set a budget and compare the whole feature set. Consider display dimming, bedtime functions, footprint, and sound options alongside the headline price.
- Check what the routine depends on. Before choosing a connected clock, confirm which features work without a phone, Wi-Fi, or subscription and whether that trade-off suits you.
