Best Scandinavian Kneeling Chairs: Fit, Comfort, and What the Evidence Says

The Varier Variable is a notable Scandinavian-designed kneeling chair, but fit and changing position matter more than promises of better back health. Compare specifications, comfort, and evidence before choosing one.

For a kneeling chair to be a good choice, it needs to fit your body and desk—and feel comfortable in the positions you can actually use. Varier’s Variable is a prominent Balans-style option, but it is designed in Norway and made in Poland, not Danish-made. Its open-seat design is intended to encourage a different seated posture; available evidence does not establish kneeling chairs as a treatment for back pain or a way to prevent injury.

What “Danish kneeling chair” means

“Danish kneeling chair” is often used loosely for the kneeling-chair style associated with Scandinavian design. Varier identifies the Variable as its original kneeling chair, designed by Peter Opsvik in 1979. The current chair is designed in Norway and made in Poland, so “Scandinavian-designed” or “Nordic in design heritage” is more accurate than “Danish-made.” Varier’s product page describes its tilted seat, two shin cushions, and curved runners.

The design gives you options: rest one or both shins on the cushions, put both feet on the floor, or shift between these positions. The curved runners allow gentle rocking. These are design features, not proof of a health benefit.

Is a kneeling chair good for your back?

It may suit some people for some tasks, but the evidence does not support treating it as a proven back-pain remedy. The available studies were small, short or limited to specific seated periods, and involved healthy participants rather than a long-term clinical trial of people with chronic back pain.

What the studies found

  • Drury and Francher, 1985: 20 healthy subjects used a Balans chair and a conventional chair for 30 minutes each. Comfort ratings favored the conventional chair. Cervical and lumbar paraspinous muscle activity measured by surface EMG increased after Balans use, while pedal cutaneous blood flow increased by 15% in the Balans condition. The authors said their data did not support the manufacturer’s claim that the chair would reduce low-back-pain complaints. PubMed record.
  • Bendix, Jensen, and Bendix, 1988: 12 healthy subjects used a knee-support Balans chair and a tiltable chair after at least three weeks of adaptation to each. The Balans chair was associated with forward pelvic tilt and a change toward lumbar lordosis, but there was no observed effect on spinal shrinkage or pulse. Subjective acceptability appeared to favor the tiltable chair over longer periods. The authors described the Balans chair as a possible alternative for some seated periods and special tasks. PubMed record.

These findings describe particular measurements in small studies; they do not establish what an individual will experience in a current chair or show that it treats pain. Varier’s product descriptions explain the intended posture and movement, but manufacturer claims are not independent evidence of clinical effectiveness.

How to choose a kneeling chair

Compare fit, desk height, support, movement, and the terms for trying and keeping the chair. A kneeling chair is one workstation choice, not a substitute for changing position or setting up work to suit you.

What to compare What to look for
Body and desk fit Check the model’s stated height guidance and the actual desk height, then assess whether the seat and shin supports feel workable for your proportions. Varier suggests a tabletop around 71–76 cm for the Variable, general user height of 150–205 cm, and a tested user capacity up to 110 kg. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of comfort for every person. Varier.
Shin and knee comfort Try how the shin cushions feel and whether you can comfortably vary foot and shin contact. If pressure on the shins or knees is a concern, compare a saddle stool: Varier describes that format as putting the feet on the floor and load on the seat rather than the knees. This is manufacturer format guidance, not evidence that one chair type is healthier overall. Varier’s comparison.
Backrest and adjustment The Variable has no backrest or mechanical adjustment, according to Varier’s commercial comparison. The company describes the Thatsit as adding an adjustable backrest and taller frame. Verify current specifications and try the fit rather than assuming more adjustment will suit you better. Varier’s comparison.
Movement The Variable’s curved runners allow gentle rocking, and its design lets you change how your shins and feet rest. Consider whether that movement feels useful for your tasks.
Comfort over a work session Because the small studies reported lower comfort or longer-period acceptability for the Balans chair than comparison chairs, where practical try a model and check the return period before buying. Individual comfort remains uncertain.
Ownership terms Check the exact seller’s return window and warranty for your market. Varier’s global page advertises a ten-year guarantee, while its U.S. product page lists a three-year limited warranty and an optional ten-year extension after registration within 30 days. Terms differ by storefront, so confirm which applies to the chair you are buying. Global product page; U.S. product page.

What Varier lists for the Variable

The Varier Variable is a useful named example when comparing the Balans-style format. Its current global product page lists dimensions of 52 × 72 × 51 cm (width × depth × height), a seat height of 50 cm, beech plywood with ash top veneer, and the fit guidance in the table above. Varier describes it as suitable for a standard-height desk. The company cautions that comfort depends on individual proportions and preferences. See the current Variable specifications.

The U.S. product listing gives a 30-day return period and lists a price that can change. Check the current listing and seller terms before purchase; these details should not be assumed to apply outside that storefront. Varier Chairs U.S. listing.

Can you use a kneeling chair all day?

The evidence here does not establish that using one all day is beneficial or comfortable. Treat it as one possible position in a varied workday, rather than a chair to remain in continuously. The Danish Working Environment Authority frames sitting, kneeling, and other work positions as part of a workstation risk assessment, emphasizing duration, fixed or static work, variation, and fitting the workstation to the worker. Its guidance states: “The work should be prepared in a variety of ways so that work is not done for a long time in the same working positions or using the same movements.” Danish Working Environment Authority guidance.
