Glazed ceramic is another suitable option. No universal pot diameter or depth is established by the cited extension guidance, so focus on drainage and the plant’s growing medium rather than a supposedly perfect measurement.
Which pot should you choose?
Choose a container with drainage holes. The University of Florida IFAS lists plastic and glazed ceramic pots used with a tray as suitable options for carnivorous plants, including Venus flytraps. Its guidance does not rank the materials or show that one produces better growth than the other.
- Plastic: A practical choice for a tray-based setup, provided the pot has drainage holes.
- Glazed ceramic: Also identified as suitable when paired with a tray and drainage holes.
See the University of Florida IFAS guide to bog gardening and carnivorous plants for its container and growing-medium guidance.
How large or deep should the pot be?
The cited extension sources do not establish a best diameter or depth for a Venus flytrap. Avoid treating a particular size, shape, or color as a proven requirement. Choose a container that accommodates the plant and your watering setup, while preserving the essential drainage path into a tray.

- Widely Use: Transparent acrylic pots can be used as seedling nursery pots or as plant pots for orchid, succulents, aloe, flowers etc. Perfect for windowsills, desks, and shelves, they enhance any indoor space.
What growing medium belongs in the pot?
Venus flytraps need a nutrient-poor medium, not ordinary fertilized potting soil. Extension services offer several workable recipes; these are alternatives, not a single formula proven superior to the others.
| Recipe | Source |
|---|---|
| Whole-fiber sphagnum, or equal parts peat moss and coarse vermiculite or sharp sand | North Carolina State Extension |
| Two parts sphagnum peat to one part perlite, vermiculite, or sand | Washington State University Extension |
| Two parts sphagnum peat moss to one part coarse sand | Iowa State University Extension and Outreach |
When buying ingredients, check labels for added fertilizer. North Carolina State Extension advises against fertilizing Venus flytraps; fertilized potting mix is not equivalent to the nutrient-poor recipes above.

- What’s Included: Each set comes with a terracotta pot and a clear glass cup. (Plants Not Included) It is perfect for planting herb, aloe, small spider plant and so on.
How should you water a potted Venus flytrap?
Use rainwater or distilled water, as recommended by North Carolina State and Iowa State Extension. North Carolina State warns that hard or treated water can kill the plant. Keep the medium from drying out, following North Carolina State’s cultivation guidance, and use a tray to catch drainage without allowing the growing medium to become dry.
Container material alone does not make a suitable setup: drainage, an appropriate nutrient-poor medium, and suitable water all matter. For further care details, consult the North Carolina State Extension Venus flytrap profile and Iowa State Extension’s care guidance.
