If you specifically want a rotary dimmer, the Leviton Trimatron RNL06-10Z is the direct match in the available manufacturer specifications: it is a rotary on/off control rated for 150W of dimmable LED/CFL or 600W of incandescent/halogen lighting at 120VAC. It is specified for single-pole use only. Check the exact bulb or fixture for compatibility and confirm your circuit before buying.

Rotary dimmer options compared

Model Control style Published use and ratings Best fit
Leviton Trimatron RNL06-10Z Rotary on/off knob Single-pole; 120VAC; 150W dimmable LED/CFL or 600W incandescent/halogen. Leviton lists a five-year limited warranty and cCSAus/NOM listings on its current product page. A straightforward choice when a rotary control is the priority and the circuit is single-pole.
Leviton Trimatron RDL06-10 Push on/off rotary control Single-pole or 3-way with a 3-way switch; the 2017 product bulletin lists 150W LED/CFL and 600W incandescent. A rotary-format option for a two-location circuit, subject to checking the exact model’s current instructions.
Lutron Ariadni/Toggler LED+ AYCL-153P-BR Toggle switch with slide dimmer Single-pole or 3-way; 150W LED or 600W incandescent/halogen; no neutral required, according to Lutron’s cited product page. An alternative for a traditional look if a rotary knob is not essential. The cited page shows a brown finish; availability varies by country.

These are manufacturer specifications, not comparative test results. The available information does not establish which model has the smoothest adjustment, least noise or flicker, or longest service life. Check current instructions, warranty terms, model status, and local availability before purchase.

Which rotary dimmer works with LED bulbs?

Match the bulb and fixture, not just the wattage category

The RNL06-10Z is listed for dimmable LED/CFL loads up to 150W at 120VAC, but that rating does not guarantee compatibility with every LED bulb or fixture. Use lamps labeled dimmable, then check Leviton’s RNL06-10Z product page and its linked LED bulb compatibility resource for the exact lamp or fixture combination.

LED dimming behavior can vary by bulb and dimmer pairing. Leviton’s separate SureSlide 6674 page advises checking its compatibility tool and matching bulb types because mixed types can produce inconsistent dimming or unpredictable startup. That advice is specific to the 6674 page; it is a reason to verify compatibility rather than evidence of a measured RNL06-10Z problem. The 6674 is marked discontinued, with Leviton suggesting replacement SKU 66741-T.

Calculate the connected load by lamp type

For the RNL06-10Z, use the applicable published limit: 150W for dimmable LED/CFL or 600W for incandescent/halogen at 120VAC. Do not treat those figures as interchangeable or infer that a dimmer rated for one lamp type supports the same wattage of another. Add the connected lamps’ stated wattages and stay within the limit for the type being used.

Can a rotary dimmer work in a 3-way circuit?

It depends on the exact model. Leviton specifies the RNL06-10Z for single-pole operation. Its Trimatron product bulletin identifies the RDL06-10 for single-pole or 3-way use when paired with a 3-way switch. Do not assume the RNL06-10Z has the RDL06-10’s two-location capability; confirm the model number and current installation instructions before choosing a dimmer.

Leviton Trimatron Rotary Dimmer Switch for Dimmable LED, Halogen and Incandescent Bulbs, RNL06-10Z, White
  • Designed for optimal control of dimmable LED and CFL bulbs. Also compatible with incandescent and halogen
  • 150W LED & CFL, 600W incandescent & halogen
  • Single pole (one-location) applications

If you are open to a non-rotary control, Lutron lists the AYCL-153P-BR for single-pole or 3-way use. It uses a toggle and separate slide control, not a rotary knob.

What to check before buying or installing

  • Lamp compatibility: Confirm the exact bulb or fixture against the dimmer maker’s compatibility information; a “dimmable” label alone is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
  • Circuit arrangement: Identify whether the light is controlled from one location or two, and select a model explicitly specified for that arrangement.
  • Load and voltage: Match the connected lamp types and total wattage to the model’s ratings and verify the circuit voltage.
  • Control format: Choose a rotary knob if that physical control is important; the Lutron alternative uses a toggle and slider.
  • Fit and wiring: Check the device’s dimensions and wiring requirements against the electrical box and existing installation. Lutron’s no-neutral specification applies to the cited AYCL-153P-BR page, not to dimmers generally.
  • Instructions and safety: These are mains-voltage devices. Follow the current manufacturer installation instructions and applicable local requirements. If the wiring or circuit is unfamiliar, use qualified electrical help.

What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you

The cited manufacturer pages and bulletin establish control style, stated load ratings, and certain circuit or wiring features. They do not provide a head-to-head performance test, current retail pricing, present inventory, or independent evidence about smoothness, flicker, noise, or durability. Choose by verified compatibility and circuit fit rather than an unsupported claim that one model is universally “best.”
