Look for an exact model certified to NSF/ANSI 177 if chlorine reduction is your goal. If you suspect hard water, test for hardness: a standard shower filter certified to this standard is not a water softener and does not address the calcium and magnesium that make water hard.
Do shower filters help eczema?
It has not been established that a shower filter improves eczema. NSF/ANSI 177 certification covers reduction of free available chlorine; it does not certify a filter as an eczema treatment, establish that it removes every contaminant, or demonstrate clinical improvement. The National Eczema Association’s 2022 article on hard water and eczema summarizes evidence suggesting hard water may negatively affect atopic dermatitis, but says interventions had not shown an overall benefit. That is not evidence that a shower filter prevents flares.
A 2017 study examined surfactant deposition after washing and subsequent skin irritation in people with atopic dermatitis and healthy controls. It offers a possible mechanism for how water characteristics could matter, but a mechanism or observed skin response does not show that a consumer shower filter prevents eczema.
Chlorine and hard water are different problems
What a shower filter certified to NSF/ANSI 177 does
NSF says shower filters certified to NSF/ANSI 177 are certified only to reduce free available chlorine. A certification applies to the stated claim, not every marketing claim made about a product. Check the exact model in the NSF overview of water-treatment standards and its NSF/ANSI 177 product listing; brand-level claims alone do not confirm that a particular model is listed.

What hard water is
Hardness comes mainly from calcium and magnesium. NSF describes water softeners as reducing hardness through ion exchange. A standard NSF/ANSI 177 shower filter addresses chlorine, not hardness, so it should not be purchased as a substitute for a softener when mineral hardness is the concern.
The National Eczema Association reproduces these general U.S. Geological Survey hardness ranges in its 2022 article. They describe water, not an eczema risk threshold:

Home water-hardness tests are available. If a test confirms hardness and you want to address it, consider a softening option suited to your household; this addresses water hardness, not an established eczema treatment.
How to choose a shower filter for sensitive skin
If you want to try a filter, choose based on a verifiable chlorine-reduction claim and practical fit—not promises of “skin health.” Check these points before buying:

- Exact model listing: Confirm that the specific model, not merely the manufacturer or product family, appears in NSF’s NSF/ANSI 177 listing.
- Certified claim: Verify that the listed claim is free available chlorine reduction. Do not assume the certification covers hardness or other substances.
- Replacement cycle: Check the stated service life and how the manufacturer defines it. A cartridge that is difficult to source or replace may not be a practical choice.
- Flow rate and fit: Compare the rated flow rate and connection with your shower setup, and confirm showerhead compatibility.
- Replacement cartridge cost and availability: Check these alongside the upfront filter cost so you can assess ongoing upkeep.
NSF’s listing includes models such as Purifull Shower, MOSAIC Shower Filter System-S / SG, Coolang ACF Filter, and Weddell Duo, with differing listed service cycles and flow rates. Listing status and product details can change; verify the current entry for the exact model before relying on it. The listing’s certification claim is free available chlorine reduction, not eczema treatment.
One documented example: KOHLER Aquifer
KOHLER’s 2020 product sheet identifies the Aquifer Shower Filter, model K-22321, as certified under NSF/ANSI 177 for chlorine reduction. The same manufacturer sheet specifies a maximum flow rate of 4.0 gallons per minute and filter life of up to 8,000 gallons or six months. Those are manufacturer specifications from 2020, not a clinical result; check the current product information and NSF listing before purchase. The sheet also names a two-pack replacement cartridge, model K-22322-NA.

What may help make showering gentler
The 2020 ETFAD/EADV position paper advises regular bathing or showering with warm rather than hot water, using very mild surfactant or emollient-based wash products, drying gently, and applying emollient while the skin is still slightly humid. It notes that good evidence for bathing effectiveness and specific bathing parameters is limited.
These are eczema-care recommendations, separate from choosing a filter. If symptoms persist or worsen, speak with a qualified healthcare professional about care suited to your situation.
