There is no single best cartridge fuse link for every circuit. Choose one that matches the equipment’s specified fuse family, ratings, response curve, interruption capacity, dimensions, holder and approval requirements. A fuse that fits physically—or has the same amp rating—is not automatically a safe substitute.
Start with the fuse family and standard
“Cartridge fuse link” can refer to different fuse families, sizes and standards systems. SCHURTER describes IEC 60127-2 as covering miniature cartridge fuse-links, with IEC 60127-1 setting general requirements for miniature links; IEC 60127-3 covers sub-miniature links. For North American supplemental fuses, the guide lists UL 248-14. These categories should not be treated as interchangeable simply because two links look alike. Check the equipment documentation and the markings on the original fuse before looking for a replacement. (SCHURTER’s Fuse-Link guide)
A fuse-link is the replaceable part that contains the fuse element. In IEC terminology, the complete fuse includes the link and its holder. A secondary theiTeh catalog entry identifies IEC 60127-2:2014/AMD1:2020 as an amendment concerning miniature cartridge fuse-links, including DC label information and test provisions; consult the applicable official standard and equipment requirements for authoritative details. Compare the ratings that determine suitability
Before choosing between candidate links, compare the full set of electrical and physical characteristics against the protected equipment and circuit. The fuse’s voltage rating must be at least the circuit’s operating voltage, but that alone does not establish that it can safely interrupt a fault or protect the load.

- Fuse family and standard: Confirm the type required by the equipment and applicable market or jurisdiction.
- Rated current and voltage: Match the equipment specification and circuit conditions. IEC and UL guidance use different rated-current conventions, so do not transfer ratings between systems casually.
- Time-current characteristic: Choose the response appropriate to normal load behavior and the protection required.
- AC or DC rating and breaking capacity: Verify interruption capability at the relevant voltage. The prospective short-circuit current must not exceed the link’s breaking capacity. AC and DC performance are not necessarily equivalent; DC breaking capacity can be considerably lower and depends partly on circuit time constant.
- I²t: Compare pre-arcing and operating I²t with startup demand and the protected component’s withstand limit.
- Fit and thermal behavior: Check body size, terminal format, holder compatibility, power dissipation, voltage drop where relevant, ambient-temperature conditions and nearby heat sources.
- Approvals: Confirm the approvals required by the equipment and jurisdiction; visual similarity does not establish certification.
Use the exact product datasheet and equipment documentation rather than selecting from a rating alone. SCHURTER cautions that even when relevant selection criteria have been considered, the fuse-link and holder fitted to equipment should be tested under normal and fault conditions. Choose the response for the load—not just the amp rating
Fuse response designations provide a starting point, not a substitute for the time-current curve. SCHURTER describes FF as very quick acting, F as quick acting, M as medium time-lag, T as time-lag and TT as long time-lag. Quick-acting links are generally associated with circuits with little or no startup surge; time-lag links may suit equipment such as motors and transformers that draw inrush current. The correct choice depends on the specific load and the manufacturer’s requirements.

Account for inrush and I²t
I²t describes the energy involved in heating, melting and interrupting a fuse element. For a load with startup inrush, the link’s pre-arcing I²t may need to exceed the inrush demand so the fuse does not open during normal startup. Conversely, when protecting a sensitive component, the fuse’s operating I²t may need to remain below the component’s permitted value. These comparisons require the actual circuit and component data; they do not support guessing a fuse rating from the load description alone. (SCHURTER’s Fuse-Link guide)
Find the right size and replacement candidate
After identifying the fuse family, use the original part marking and equipment documentation to confirm the body dimensions, terminal style, rated current and voltage, response characteristic, interruption rating and approvals. A 5×20 mm cartridge fuse assortment is one way to find candidate miniature links in that size. Littelfuse lists miniature 5×20 mm medium-acting glass-body fuses as a commercial category, but an assortment’s inclusion of a matching size does not establish suitability for a particular appliance or circuit. (Littelfuse cartridge fuse category)
For any candidate, verify its markings and datasheet against the existing fuse and equipment instructions before purchase. In particular, confirm that current, voltage, speed, breaking capacity, certification and physical fit all match the application. Product listings and availability can change.

A fuse that has opened may be responding to an overload or fault. Do not fit a higher-current link merely to stop repeat failures: doing so can undermine the equipment’s intended protection. SCHURTER advises de-energizing the circuit before exchanging a link and not using a fuseholder as an on/off switch. If the cause of the failure is not clear, have the circuit and equipment checked by a qualified person before returning it to service. (SCHURTER’s Fuse-Link guide)
