If you’re searching for a “countertop range,” you may mean a slide-in range for a more integrated look—or a separate cooktop. A kitchen range combines a cooktop and an oven; a cooktop alone does not include an oven. “Countertop range” is not a standardized appliance category. GE Appliances defines a range as an appliance that “combines a cooktop and an oven into a single appliance” (GE Appliances).

For a kitchen upgrade, start with the appliance configuration and the cabinet opening, then confirm fuel, electrical service, ventilation, and the features you will actually use. No single range is best for every kitchen, and a polished appearance is only an advantage if the appliance fits and can be installed safely.

What is the difference between a slide-in and freestanding range?

The main distinction is how the range meets the surrounding cabinets and where its controls sit. Samsung’s guide explains the differences between these configurations (Samsung range buying guide).

Configuration Typical appearance and fit What to check
Freestanding Generally more flexible to place; may have a rear control panel or backguard. Confirm the appliance’s full dimensions and whether the backguard suits the wall and surrounding cabinetry.
Slide-in Designed to fit between cabinets, usually with front controls, for a more tailored appearance. Some models have unfinished sides and may not suit an exposed end-of-run position. With no backguard, the wall behind the range may need suitable protection. Check the specific installation instructions.

Before choosing for appearance, establish whether the range will sit between cabinets or at the end of a run. Compare the finish, control location, backguard, and side treatment against the actual kitchen. Available finishes vary by brand and model; for example, Samsung lists finishes such as matte black, white glass, and stainless steel across its range lineup, but not necessarily on every model.

What is the standard size of a kitchen range?

About 30 inches wide is a common range size, according to manufacturer guidance, but that is not a guarantee that a particular model will fit your opening. Compact and extra-wide models also exist. Samsung and Whirlpool both emphasize checking model-specific measurements rather than relying on a nominal width (Samsung range buying guide; Whirlpool range dimensions guide).

Measure the opening and the appliance

Measure the cabinet opening’s width, height, and depth. Then compare those measurements with the exact model’s specification sheet and installation manual. Check the required cutout, clearances, and utility locations as well as the stated product dimensions.

  • Confirm height and clearance requirements, including any space above the cooktop.
  • Verify gas and electrical connections and their locations before delivery.

Do not assume a range advertised as 30 inches wide will match a 30-inch opening: the applicable fit depends on the exact model and installation requirements.

Is a gas, electric or induction range better for your kitchen?

The right fuel type depends on the utilities available, cooking preferences, cookware, ventilation, and the model’s connection requirements. Dual-fuel models add a second utility requirement by combining a gas cooktop with an electric oven. Manufacturer guidance describes the principal trade-offs (Samsung range buying guide).

Gas You prefer a visible flame and responsive heat adjustment, and the home has a compatible gas connection. Proper ventilation and the model’s gas connection requirements. Check the installation manual and applicable local requirements.
Electric radiant You want a smooth cooktop surface; Whirlpool describes electric ovens as providing dry, consistent heat. The model’s required electrical connection. The smooth surface may be easier to clean, but confirm care instructions.
Induction You want an electric option that uses electromagnetic energy to heat cookware. Compatible pans and the correct electrical service. Check existing cookware for compatibility before buying.
Dual fuel You want a gas cooktop paired with an electric oven. Access to both gas and suitable electrical service, as specified for the model.

Samsung recommends proper ventilation for all range types and says it is especially important for gas ranges. There is no universal hood specification established here: follow the range’s installation manual and applicable local requirements rather than assuming a single size or airflow rating.

Samsung also reports an ENERGY STAR estimate that induction cooking transfers about 85% of its heating energy to cookware, compared with about one-third for gas cooking products (Samsung range buying guide). Those are energy-transfer figures, not a promise of lower household bills or a comparison of specific range models.

Which cooking features are worth comparing?

Choose features around the meals and routines the household has. A larger oven cavity can help with multiple dishes or large cookware, but capacity in cubic feet is only part of the fit: interior dimensions and rack positions matter too.

  • Oven capacity and racks: Compare interior space, rack positions, and whether the items you cook will fit comfortably.
  • Single or double oven: A double oven may help if you often cook dishes at different temperatures; it is not automatically useful for every household.
  • Cooktop layout: Consider burner or element count, size, and arrangement against the cookware you use, not just the headline specification.
  • Convection and cleaning: Compare available cooking modes and cleaning options, then check the model’s operating and care instructions.
  • Smart features: Include them in the decision only if the household will use them.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide advises that at least five oven-rack positions provide more flexibility, and says double ovens can help frequent hosts cook dishes at different temperatures. It also cautions that higher Btu did not guarantee faster heating in its gas-range tests. Treat these as buyer guidance and test findings, not performance guarantees for every model (Consumer Reports range buying guide).

Does a more expensive range perform better?

Not necessarily. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide says most ranges cost between $700 and $3,000, with coil models below $700 and pro-style options above $3,000. These are broad guidebook figures, not live retailer quotes; prices vary over time, and the cited guidance does not specify a geography. The same guide notes that more expensive pro-style ranges are not necessarily its best-performing models (Consumer Reports range buying guide).

For this reason, price, premium styling, extra burners, and higher Btu should not stand in for evidence about fit or cooking performance. A sensible comparison considers configuration, dimensions and clearances, fuel connections, useful oven and cooktop features, finish, and total installed cost.

How to choose a range that fits the kitchen

  1. Clarify the appliance. Decide whether you need a combined range or a separate cooktop. If the goal is a more integrated look, compare slide-in models with freestanding alternatives.
  2. Check the cabinet position. Note whether the range will sit between cabinets or at an exposed end, and assess its sides, controls, and backguard accordingly.
  3. Measure the space. Record the opening’s width, height, and depth, then compare the exact model’s dimensions, clearances, and installation requirements.
  4. Confirm utilities and ventilation. Match the fuel type to available connections and follow the model’s installation manual and local requirements.
  5. Prioritize useful features. Compare oven capacity, rack positions, cooktop layout, cleaning and cooking modes, and any smart functions you expect to use.
  6. Check current model evidence and terms. Before purchase, review current independent test results, manufacturer specifications, service coverage, installation constraints, and retailer delivery and installation terms.
