The best sleeping bag for a child is one that fits their height, suits the planned trip and works with the expected conditions and the rest of their sleep system. Don’t choose by the temperature number alone: children’s bag ratings are not validated by the adult sleeping-bag standard ISO 23537.
How to choose a sleeping bag for your child
Start with the child’s height and the bag’s construction
Check the manufacturer’s stated height limit and how the bag adjusts as your child grows. A bag that is too long can leave extra space to warm; one that is too short can restrict movement or fail to cover the child comfortably. For example, REI lists its Kindercone 25 for children up to 5 feet and describes a length-adjuster feature in its stuff sack. Big Agnes lists the Little Red 20 for children up to 4 feet. These are product specifications, not independent fit tests.
Match the shape to the trip
A rectangular bag generally gives a child more room to move and may unzip into a quilt; a mummy shape tapers around the body and is designed to reduce excess space. The right trade-off depends on whether roomy comfort, warmth-oriented coverage, or compact packing matters most for your outing. Check the specific bag’s listed features rather than assuming all bags of one shape behave alike.
Think about conditions and the complete sleep system
Use the maker’s temperature claim as one piece of information, not a guarantee that your child will be warm at that outdoor temperature. Conditions, clothing, fit, the sleeping surface and the child all matter. For camping, consider ground insulation separately: Big Agnes’s Little Red listing describes a pad-attachment feature and says the pad is not included. The listing does not establish compatibility with every pad.

What do children’s sleeping-bag temperature ratings mean?
Read a child’s temperature claim cautiously. ISO 23537-1:2022 sets requirements, test methods and labelling for adult recreational sleeping bags with limit temperatures at or above −20°C, but explicitly excludes sleeping bags for children and babies. It states: “No prediction model exists for the determination of the limiting temperatures based on the thermal resistance of the sleeping bag for children and babies.” ISO 23537-1:2022 therefore does not validate a children’s bag rating.
ISO 23537-2:2023 also concerns adult recreational bags and excludes children’s and babies’ bags. The 2016 edition of Part 1 is withdrawn and superseded by the 2022 edition. Neither adult standard should be presented as proof of how warm a particular child will be in a children’s bag. ISO 23537-2:2023 · ISO 23537-1:2016 status

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What else should you check before a child uses a sleeping bag?
- Use: Decide whether the bag is for a sleepover, car camping or a trip where carrying weight and packed size matter.
- Care: Check the product’s washing and care instructions before purchase.
- Closures and openings: Make sure the child can get in and out comfortably and that the bag’s construction suits their age and size.
- Separate gear: Confirm whether a sleeping pad is included or must be supplied separately.
Safety guidance depends on jurisdiction and product type. An EU decision on children’s sleeping bags says warnings and instructions should tell carers to choose a bag recommended for the child’s age and height. It also addresses room-temperature warnings, stable seams and fastenings, openings that help prevent a child slipping down, and cords or loops that could create entanglement or choking hazards. This is EU guidance for children’s sleep bags; it is not worldwide law and should not be assumed to apply identically to every outdoor camping bag. EU Decision 2010/376
