A bar sink is most useful when it earns a defined job: rinsing produce, prepping food, serving drinks, or handling glassware away from the main cleanup sink. Choose its bowl capacity and installation around that work, then confirm that the sink fits the cabinet and the project’s plumbing plan. A sink labeled “bar” or “prep” is not automatically large enough for every task.
Decide what the second sink needs to do
Start with the work, not the product label. A compact bowl can be convenient for filling glasses or rinsing a few items; food preparation may call for more usable bowl space and depth. If the sink is meant to take on a substantial prep workload, compare its actual interior dimensions with the items you expect to wash.
- Drinks and glassware: Consider faucet placement and whether the bowl can accommodate the glassware you use.
- Light rinsing: Check interior width, length, and depth against produce, small dishes, or other typical items.
- Food preparation: Prioritize usable bowl capacity and practical access to the faucet and drain.

Choose material and mounting for the countertop

For your plan, identify the sink’s intended station and check how it relates to usable counter space, storage, traffic, and the main cleanup area. Then have the installer assess the project-specific drain, faucet, rough-in, and plumbing requirements.
