For a larger body or a higher weight requirement, start with a chair whose published capacity leaves an appropriate margin, then check whether its seat, arms, height range and adjustments fit you and your desk. No single chair can be called the best for everyone from capacity alone. The options below are manufacturer- or comparison-publisher-listed models to investigate, not chairs tested for this article.
How to choose a chair that fits
Weight capacity is a screening criterion, not a guarantee of comfort, ergonomic fit, safety or lifespan. Compare the actual chair configuration against your body and work setup.
- Capacity and evidence: Identify who publishes the limit and whether the source names a test standard or independent test. A stated capacity is not the same thing as a certification.
- Seat and arm fit: Check seat width and depth, clear space between the arms, and whether the arms interfere with your desk or preferred sitting position.
- Adjustment range: Confirm seat-height range, lumbar adjustment, arm options and back adjustments for the specific configuration you can buy.
- Construction and use: Reinforced components may be relevant to a higher-capacity chair, but a capacity figure alone does not establish durability. Check intended use, mechanisms, base and casters.
- Support after purchase: Read the current warranty terms and exclusions, and confirm availability, return options, replacement parts and whether a dealer can help with fit.
The available product information does not provide a full, comparable set of seat and arm dimensions for the models below. Ask the manufacturer or dealer for exact measurements for the particular configuration before ordering.
Higher-capacity office chairs to investigate
| Chair or line | Published capacity and source | Fit and construction details reported | Warranty reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steelcase Think | Steelcase says it supports users up to 400 lb. The cited product page does not establish an independent capacity test or certification. Steelcase product page | Adjustable lumbar is standard; arm configurations include 4D, height-adjustable, fixed or no arms. Verify dimensions for the chosen configuration. | Steelcase describes a 12-year, multi-shift warranty covering parts and labor. Check current terms for the model and region. |
| RFM Phoenix Big & Tall | RFM lists capacity up to 400 lb; the cited page does not establish a particular independent capacity test. RFM product page | Multiple seat sizes, reinforced 11-ply seat shell, 28-inch reinforced nylon base, 70 mm heavy-duty casters and heavy-duty control options. Adjustable air lumbar is optional. | RFM states a 12-year warranty; confirm coverage and exclusions. |
| Seating Inc. 400 Super Duty | Seating Inc. describes this tier as rated to 400 lb for larger users and multiple shifts. Seating Inc. fit information | Manufacturer describes reinforced construction. Confirm dimensions, available adjustments and configuration directly. | Seating Inc. lists a 15-year warranty. |
| Seating Inc. 550 Generous Fit | Seating Inc. rates this tier to 550 lb and says it is not suitable for users under 200 lb. Seating Inc. fit information | Manufacturer lists a reinforced steel substructure, fixed arms for user stability, heavy-duty mechanism, cylinder and casters, and a 28-inch aluminum base. This is a distinct chair class, not simply a higher-rated version that will suit everyone. | Seating Inc. lists a 15-year warranty. |
| HON Sadie Big and Tall (HVST341) | Rated Sturdy’s comparison, updated September 4, 2026, reports a 400 lb stated capacity and says the listing names no test standard. This is the comparison publisher’s finding, not an independent test for this article. Rated Sturdy comparison | The comparison describes a wide seat and height-adjustable arms; it characterizes the lumbar support as contoured rather than adjustable. Check the current configuration and dimensions. | The comparison reports five years; verify current warranty terms. |
| HON Wave VL705VM10 | Rated Sturdy’s September 4, 2026 comparison reports a 450 lb stated capacity and says the listing names no test standard. Rated Sturdy comparison | The cited comparison does not provide a full comparable dimension set here. Verify seat, arm and adjustment details for the current listing. | The comparison reports five years; verify current warranty terms. |
| Boss B991-CP | Rated Sturdy’s September 4, 2026 comparison reports a 400 lb stated capacity and says the listing names no test standard. Rated Sturdy comparison | The cited comparison does not provide a full comparable dimension set here. Verify fit and configuration directly. | Not reported by Rated Sturdy’s comparison. |
| Brage Living (model not specified in the cited comparison) | Rated Sturdy describes a 400 lb listing claim without a named standard. Rated Sturdy comparison | The comparison does not identify enough model-specific dimensions here to assess fit. Verify the exact model and configuration. | No long warranty is reported by the comparison. |
Steelcase, RFM and Seating Inc. are the clearest starting points if adjustable lumbar, multiple seat sizes or published construction details matter to your shortlist. The comparison-listed alternatives may be worth checking when their specific dimensions and current terms suit your needs. These distinctions do not establish a universal ranking.

What the published ratings do—and do not—tell you
Rated Sturdy’s table says it checked the cited capacities against manufacturer listings or spec sheets when it was updated September 4, 2026, and reports that none of the models in its table names a test standard on the listing. The page discusses ANSI/BIFMA X5.11 as relevant to large-occupant office chairs, but that does not establish that any model listed here is certified to that standard. Do not treat a capacity listing as certification.
Product capacity and warranty duration are specifications, not evidence that a chair produces a particular health outcome. The available sources do not establish which chair is best for people grouped under the label “overweight,” nor do they provide clinical outcomes or a common independent test across these models.

Please note: Each chair is handmade, so there may be slight variations in curves or individual pieces. Minor differences from the description may occur, and we appreciate your understanding.
Before you buy
- Measure your seated width and the desk opening, including space between desk supports, and compare those measurements with the chair’s usable seat width and arm clearance.
- Check the manufacturer’s current seat depth, seat-height range and back dimensions for the exact configuration. If these are not published, ask the manufacturer or dealer rather than inferring fit from the capacity.
- Choose the lumbar and arm setup you need. For example, Steelcase lists adjustable lumbar as standard and multiple arm choices; RFM offers optional adjustable air lumbar and multiple seat sizes.
- Ask for the capacity source and whether a named standard or independent test applies to the exact model. Do not assume a standard discussed by a comparison publisher means the chair is certified.
- Read warranty coverage, exclusions, return terms and replacement-part availability before purchase. Confirm current stock, pricing and regional availability with the seller.
Steelcase lists availability across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Central America, South America, and the Middle East and Africa, but availability and configuration can vary by market.
