Use a maintenance spray on a clean surface
A historical label hosted by the EPA directs users to remove heavy buildup or soil before starting daily use. That is guidance for the product covered by that label, not a substitute for the current directions on other cleaners. For routine prevention, first bring the shower to the condition specified on the product’s own label, then apply it as directed after showering.

How to choose with less guesswork
- For upkeep: choose a product labeled for daily or after-shower use, and follow its directions on whether to rinse, wipe, or leave it in place.
- For visible deposits: choose a cleaner whose label identifies the type of buildup, such as soap scum or limescale, and plan for any stated dwell time, wiping, and rinsing.
- For a particular surface: verify that the exact product permits use on that material and follow spot-test directions.
- For mildew or disinfecting: look for the specific claim on the product label rather than inferring it from the word “cleaner.”
