The best apartment refrigerator is the one that fits your kitchen opening, clears its doors and delivery route, and gives you the layout and usable space your household needs. Start with 24-inch models for the tightest openings; consider 30-inch models for more layout choices; look at counter-depth when reducing projection into the kitchen matters more than maximizing capacity. The Frigidaire and Samsung models below are specification examples, not independently tested winners.
Measure the space—and the route into it—before choosing a size
Measure the opening’s width, height and depth, then account for nearby walls, cabinets, islands and other obstructions. Check how the refrigerator doors and handles will swing, and whether drawers can open fully. The exact ventilation and installation clearances vary by model, so use that refrigerator’s current installation guide rather than relying on a general size category.

Measure the delivery path as well: doors, halls, stairs, elevator and tight turns can all limit what reaches the kitchen. In an apartment, also check building or lease rules and confirm delivery, haul-away and return terms with the relevant property manager and retailer. These details are location- and provider-specific.
Choose a width and layout that match your kitchen
24-inch models: for the tightest openings
Maytag describes 24-inch refrigerators as a compact full-size format, often with separate fresh-food and freezer compartments. Top-freezer and bottom-freezer designs are common, while optional features may be more limited than on larger refrigerators. This category is worth considering when a wider unit simply will not fit; check the exact model’s capacity and dimensions rather than assuming every 24-inch refrigerator has the same interior.

30-inch models: more layout options
Maytag describes 30-inch refrigerators as the smallest standard size and lists top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door and side-by-side configurations among the available styles. A 30-inch opening can therefore offer more choice, but it is not automatically a fit: verify the appliance’s actual width, height, depth and required clearances.
Door style: consider access as well as appearance
- Top-freezer: A traditional arrangement with the freezer above the fresh-food compartment.
- Bottom-freezer: Places fresh food higher, which may suit households that access it more often.
- French-door: Paired upper doors can provide broad access to the fresh-food section. Whirlpool says most of its French-door refrigerators are 30–36 inches wide and 69–72 inches high; those figures describe Whirlpool’s product group, not every apartment refrigerator.
- Side-by-side: Narrower door swings may help in some tight kitchens, though the split interior changes how wide items fit. Maytag says its smallest side-by-side category is typically 33 inches wide, so it may not suit a narrow opening.
Decide whether counter-depth is worth the capacity tradeoff
Counter-depth can keep a refrigerator from projecting as far into a narrow kitchen, but it may reduce available capacity compared with a standard-depth design. Whirlpool’s guidance describes counter-depth refrigerators as typically 24–25 inches deep and standard-depth refrigerators as 30–36 inches deep. Maytag describes counter-depth units as reducing depth by around six inches versus standard refrigerators. These are category-level descriptions, not installation measurements for a specific model; dimensions and capacity vary, so compare the manufacturer’s exact specifications.
When comparing capacity, look for the total volume and, where stated, the separate refrigerator and freezer volumes. A larger total does not by itself tell you whether shelves, drawers and door bins suit the food you store. Consider the largest items you need to fit and whether freezer organization matters to your household.
Compare features and energy data on the exact model
Ice makers, water dispensers, adjustable shelves and temperature-controlled drawers may add convenience, but can affect usable space, complexity and price. The category guidance from Maytag and Whirlpool describes feature availability; it does not establish reliability. If preserving freezer room is a priority, compare models without a built-in ice maker; a countertop ice maker is a separate option, not a refrigerator feature recommendation.

For energy comparisons, check the current ENERGY STAR product record or energy label for the exact model. Certification and an annual energy figure help identify a product’s stated energy information, but neither alone establishes comparative performance or lifetime cost. For example, ENERGY STAR’s 2026 record capture for the Frigidaire FFHT2022A* lists 469 kWh/year. Do not treat that figure as a savings estimate or compare it with another refrigerator unless you have comparable data for both.

| Model | Documented specifications | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Frigidaire FFHT2022A* | ENERGY STAR’s 2026 record capture lists a top-freezer design, 20.0 cubic feet total capacity, 30.0-inch width, 66.4-inch height, 469 kWh/year and ENERGY STAR certification. The record identifies the United States and Canada markets. | Check the current model variant, depth, installation clearances and current installation guide. The record’s figures are not an independent comparative test. |
| Samsung RF18A5101SR/AA | Samsung describes it as an 18-cubic-foot, 33-inch-wide, counter-depth, three-door French-door refrigerator and identifies ENERGY STAR certification. | Confirm the current specification sheet, depth, required clearances and door swing. Use a fit-first shortlist before ordering
- Record the opening and obstacles. Measure width, height and depth, including nearby walls and cabinets that could affect installation or door movement.
- Check the exact installation guide. Compare the model’s dimensions and required clearances with your measurements; do not substitute a category’s typical size for the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Confirm delivery access. Measure the route through the apartment building and ask the retailer about delivery constraints, haul-away and returns.
- Match layout and capacity to daily use. Compare fresh-food and freezer volume, door swing, shelf arrangement and the features you will actually use.
- Check energy information and local constraints. Review the exact model’s energy record or label, and confirm any building rules or water-line requirements before ordering a model that needs them.
For a tight opening, begin with compact 24-inch top- or bottom-freezer models. If the opening allows it and a wider choice of layouts matters, compare 30-inch models. If reducing projection into the kitchen is the priority, consider counter-depth options while checking whether their capacity meets your needs.
