For a dorm bathroom down the hall, start with a portable mesh shower caddy you can carry with your toiletries. If your room has a suite or private bathroom, a rigid plastic tote or fixed organizer may fit better. Mesh and plastic options are both listed as dorm-bath products, but the available sources do not establish a tested best model or prove that one material dries faster, stays cleaner, or lasts longer.
Choose based on how you use the bathroom
Shared bathroom down the hall
If you need to carry shampoo, soap, and other supplies between your room and a communal shower, portability is the first priority. A portable mesh caddy is one format to consider. Check that its handle or straps make it comfortable to carry and that its pockets suit what you plan to bring.
Suite or private bathroom
When toiletries can stay near the shower, a rigid plastic tote or a fixed organizer may be more convenient than a carry-all. Before choosing a hanging organizer, confirm that the bathroom has a suitable hook or other place to hang it. For a tote, consider its footprint and whether it can stand securely where you intend to store it.
Mesh or plastic: which is better for a dorm?
The answer depends on whether you will carry supplies or store them in one place. A recent discussion in r/bostoncollege poses the same practical question about mesh versus plastic for a shared dorm bathroom, but the discussion is anecdotal rather than product-performance evidence. Target lists both mesh caddies and plastic or rust-resistant organizers in its dorm-bath category.

These are format-based considerations, not proof that either material performs better. Compare the actual product design rather than assuming that mesh is automatically more hygienic or that plastic is automatically more durable.

Check availability before choosing a specific product
A product page from Dorm Co. describes a mesh hanging caddy with six pockets and quick-drying mesh, but marks that specific item as discontinued. Its listing is useful for understanding the features a mesh caddy may advertise, not as a current purchase recommendation. Verify present availability and specifications on any product page before buying.
