The best gloves for concrete work depend on whether you are handling wet cement or cured masonry. Wet Portland cement can cause caustic burns and dermatitis, so choose gloves documented for the specific cement product and exposure—not merely gloves described as water-resistant. For cured block and concrete, match grip, abrasion and impact protection to the job.
First, distinguish wet cement from cured concrete
Wet Portland cement is a skin hazard, not just a messy material. OSHA warns that exposure can cause serious skin injuries, including caustic burns, and illnesses such as contact or allergic dermatitis. Injury may develop without an obvious immediate warning. Read OSHA’s interpretation on glove use by masons and its Portland cement skin-safety guidance.
Handling cured blocks or rough concrete presents a different set of concerns: grip, abrasion, cuts, punctures, impact, dexterity and physical stress. Select gloves for the hazards of the task rather than assuming one pair is right for every stage of concrete work.
How to choose gloves for wet cement, mortar or grout
- Check the product SDS. Cement and concrete-related products can differ. Review the safety data sheet for the material you will use, then check the glove manufacturer’s documentation for the chemical exposure and expected contact duration.
- Look for documented material suitability. OSHA says butyl or nitrile gloves are frequently recommended for caustic materials such as Portland cement. That is general guidance, not proof that any particular glove is suitable for every product or exposure. Confirm the recommendation against the SDS and glove supplier’s instructions.
- Choose a fit and cuff that keep cement out. Loose gloves can allow wet cement to enter. Use a close fit and an arrangement that suits the work while helping prevent material from getting inside.
- Keep the inside clean and dry. Wash hands before putting gloves on and whenever removing them. Replace gloves that are worn out or grossly contaminated; clean reusable pairs only as the manufacturer directs.
Do not rely on cotton or leather gloves as the sole barrier to wet Portland cement: OSHA’s cement guidance does not identify them among the materials frequently recommended for caustic cement contact. Barrier creams are not a substitute either; OSHA says “invisible gloves” are not effective protection against Portland cement hazards.

How to choose gloves for cured concrete and masonry
For lifting or placing cured block, handling rough concrete, or moving masonry, start with grip and abrasion resistance. Then consider the task’s likely cuts, punctures and impacts, as well as how much dexterity it requires. OSHA’s PPE selection guidance says to choose gloves for anticipated hazards and consider dexterity, exposure duration and frequency, and physical stress; see the OSHA Federal Register PPE selection guidance.
- Grip: Choose a palm surface suited to the material and conditions, especially if pieces are slick or awkward to hold.
- Abrasion and durability: Rough surfaces can wear gloves quickly; inspect them and replace worn pairs.
- Cut, puncture and impact protection: Match protection to edges, debris and handling risks on the specific job.
- Dexterity: A glove that makes a precise task difficult may affect safe handling. Balance protection with the movement and feel required.

These are manufacturer descriptions and listed specifications, not independent comparative test results. Water resistance or suitability for wet-material handling does not establish protection for prolonged contact with wet Portland cement. Confirm current product documentation for the cement product and exposure you expect.

A 2019 safety data sheet from Target Products, Ltd. for a concrete-related product says nitrile, butyl and PVC gloves have been found adequate for incidental contact and warns burns may occur with little warning. That advice applies to the product covered by that sheet; it should not be treated as a universal glove recommendation for all cement or concrete products. Read the applicable Target Products, Ltd.
