The best cleaner for a wooden table depends on its finish. For routine care, start with a soft cloth, use little or no moisture, wipe spills promptly, and dry the surface. Before using a spray, oil, or polish, check the table maker’s care instructions: a product suitable for sealed wood may not suit an oiled or soap-treated tabletop.
Start by identifying the table’s finish
“Wooden table” can mean several different surfaces. Vitra gives different care instructions for oiled solid wood and sealed veneer; Carl Hansen & Søn distinguishes oil-treated from soap-treated tabletops; and Arhaus provides guidance for lacquered wood. These differences matter: there is no cleaner or treatment established as safe for every wood-table finish.
Look for a care label, product manual, or maintenance guidance from the table’s maker. If you cannot identify the finish, avoid experimenting with polish, oil, wax, or a strong cleaner. Ask the manufacturer or retailer what routine cleaning method is appropriate for that specific surface.
How to clean a wooden table safely
- Remove dust gently. Use a soft cloth rather than an abrasive pad or scrubber.
- Check whether damp cleaning is allowed. If the table maker permits it, use a lightly damp cloth, not a wet one. Some finished surfaces may be cleaned with mild soap, but Carl Hansen & Søn advises against detergents or chemicals for its oil-treated tabletop guidance.
- Wipe spills promptly. Blot or wipe liquid instead of letting it sit on the surface.
- Dry the table. Use a clean, soft cloth to remove remaining moisture when the care instructions call for damp cleaning or after a spill.
- Spot-test a commercial product when directed. Follow the product label and the furniture maker’s instructions. Weiman, for example, directs users to test its cleaner in an inconspicuous area first.
Which cleaner should you choose?
For routine dusting, a soft cloth is the simplest choice. For a cleaner, the table maker’s guidance should come first; a label that says “wood” does not establish compatibility with every finish.

Weiman Cabinet & Wood Clean & Shine is one option to consider for compatible finished wood. Its manufacturer lists finished wood tables among the intended surfaces and instructs users to test in an inconspicuous spot. The manufacturer also makes claims about shine and protection from stains or watermarks. These are product claims, not independent comparative test results or a guarantee of compatibility with your table.
Use a cleaner only if its label and the table’s care instructions are compatible. A spray intended for finished wood is not automatically suitable for an oil-treated or soap-treated surface.

What to avoid
Do not assume that common household cleaners or furniture treatments are harmless on wood. The reviewed furniture-care guidance cautions against harsh or abrasive products, and Vitra warns against silicone-containing products as well. Guidance also varies on oil and wax, which can be unsuitable for some finishes.
In particular, do not default to vinegar, bleach, ammonia, abrasive scrubbers, silicone-containing polish, oil, or wax. The risk depends on the surface treatment. If the table’s instructions do not approve a product, check with its maker before applying it.

Protect the surface between cleanings

- Use maintenance oil or a care kit only when the maker specifies it for the table’s finish.
When oil treatment is part of the care routine
Some oil-treated solid-wood tabletops call for periodic oil maintenance. Carl Hansen & Søn describes using the supplied care kit for applicable dining tables and preparing the surface before oiling. That procedure is specific to the tables and finish covered by its guidance; it should not be transferred to a lacquered, sealed, soap-treated, or unidentified surface without confirmation from the table maker.
