For long therapy sessions, the best chair is the one that fits your body and workspace: look for adjustable seat height and depth, back or lumbar support that feels well aligned, and arms that work with your desk and preferred posture. No therapist-specific study or independent chair comparison here establishes a single best model, so use documented features and your own fit—not a product label or claimed clinical benefit—to choose.
How to choose a chair for long sessions
Start with fit and adjustment rather than the word “ergonomic.” The following priorities apply general occupational seating principles to a therapist’s work; they are not findings from a study of therapists or therapy outcomes.
- Seat height: Check that the chair can be set to a comfortable height for your desk and working posture.
- Seat depth: Look for an adjustment that lets you position the seat to suit your body rather than forcing one fixed depth.
- Back and lumbar support: Choose support that can be positioned comfortably against your back. Adjustable lumbar support may help you tailor the fit.
- Arms: Consider whether the armrests can be adjusted or configured to suit your desk and the posture you use during sessions.
- Practical fit: Confirm the chair’s supported user weight, upholstery and maintenance needs, warranty, service options, local availability, and return terms for the exact model and configuration.
Where possible, try the chair in person. A feature list can show what adjusts, but it cannot establish whether a particular chair will feel comfortable to you.

When a lumbar cushion may be worth considering
If the chair’s adjustments do not correct inadequate back support, a lumbar support cushion may be an option to consider. Malaysia’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health discusses this conditionally in its 2024 publication on seating at work and prolonged seated work: Occupational Safety and Health for Seating at Work 2024. A cushion is a fit aid to consider when adjustment falls short, not a substitute for choosing a chair that fits.
