A broken zipper slider can sometimes be replaced without unsewing the zipper. The design reported by Hackaday uses a two-piece, 3D-printed plastic slider that fits around the zipper chain and is assembled in place, avoiding the usual step of opening a zipper end to thread on a one-piece slider. It is an option only when the slider is the fault and the teeth and tape are still usable.
How do I fix a zipper without sewing?
First check whether the slider is actually the problem. If the zipper teeth or coil are intact and the tape is not torn, a replacement slider may restore operation. A split slider can be assembled around the chain, so you do not have to unsew the zipper end just to put the replacement on.
Hackaday’s Donald Papp reported a design by MisterJ made from two printed pieces. The parts join around the zipper rather than sliding onto it from an opened end. That construction is what makes this approach different from fitting a conventional one-piece slider; it does not mean every zipper repair can be done without sewing.
Can I replace a zipper slider without unsewing the zipper?
Yes, if the replacement is the split design and its size and orientation match your zipper. The reported model is offered in STEP format, with several common sizes and standard and reverse configurations. Hackaday says the files can be adjusted in CAD. Check the design files against the zipper in hand; the report does not provide a universal fit specification.

The report also describes the green part’s print orientation: its layer lines run perpendicular to the load on the peg, an arrangement the article says is intended to maximize peg strength. That is a design observation, not proof of a particular strength or lifespan. The reporting does not specify printer, filament, layer height, infill, supports, tolerances, or measured service life, so consult the model files for its actual requirements rather than assuming generic settings will work.
Can you 3D print a zipper slider?
This design shows that a zipper slider can be 3D printed, but it is a plastic replacement, not a demonstrated equivalent to a metal slider. Hackaday notes that a metal slider is more durable than a plastic one. No independent durability testing or service-life figure is reported, so consider the printed part a repair option whose performance in your particular use is not established.

Hackaday also mentions a printable zipper box replacement. That is a separate component from the slider; replacing a slider will not repair a broken box or other damaged zipper hardware.
How do I know what size zipper slider I need?
For a purchased replacement, ZlideOn advises checking the number on the back of the old slider or measuring the width of the zipper teeth or coil, then matching the result to the product’s size guide. This is manufacturer guidance for its products; sizing and fit may not translate identically among brands. Its product information covers several zipper types, including metal, plastic, coil, invisible, and waterproof/outdoor zippers, but that does not mean one replacement fits all of them.

For MisterJ’s printed model, compare the zipper with the exact size and configuration in the STEP files. Confirm whether the design is standard or reverse orientation and verify the fit before relying on it. The report does not establish exact dimensions for every listed size.
When a slider replacement will not work
A replacement slider cannot put missing teeth back on a chain or mend zipper tape that has torn away from the garment. Inspect the full length of the zipper first. If the chain or tape is damaged, a tailor or a more extensive zipper repair may be necessary; a new slider alone is not the fix.

Choose the repair that matches the damage

If using a purchased replacement, follow that product’s own instructions. For example, ZlideOn’s jacket guide says to remove the old slider carefully with pliers, fit its replacement around the teeth, press it closed, and zip at least 10 cm on the first pull to align the teeth. Those directions apply to ZlideOn’s product, not automatically to MisterJ’s printed design.
