In a 2023 controlled experiment, electrically stimulated barley seedlings had an average 50% increase in dry weight after 15 days. That is a promising proof of concept, not evidence that eSoil reliably boosts harvests across crops or home gardens.
What is electronic soil?
Despite its name, eSoil is not soil dug from a garden bed. It is a porous scaffold that supports roots in hydroponics, where plants grow without field soil in water supplied with nutrients. The scaffold combines cellulose with the conductive polymer PEDOT; its active material is described as an organic mixed ionic-electronic conductor.
Nor is eSoil an electronic moisture meter or a sensor placed in conventional soil. Its conductive component is part of the root-supporting substrate, and the research used electrical polarization to stimulate plants growing in that material.
How does eSoil work?
In the experiment, barley roots grew into the porous scaffold while electrical stimulation was applied through the conductive substrate. The researchers observed more efficient nitrate reduction and assimilation in stimulated seedlings, a finding that may help explain the growth response.

The complete biological mechanism remains unresolved. Eleni Stavrinidou, associate professor at Linköping University and supervisor of the study, said: “We don’t yet know how it actually works, which biological mechanisms that are involved. What we have found is that seedlings process nitrogen more effectively, but it’s not clear yet how the electrical stimulation impacts this process,” Linköping University reported on 27 December 2023. The findings do not establish that growers can reduce fertilizer use or that a particular plant signaling pathway is responsible.
What did the barley experiment find?
In the 2023 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, barley seedlings exposed to electrical stimulation showed an average 50% increase in dry weight after 15 days. The reported measure was seedling dry weight—not mature-grain harvest or a general crop-yield increase. The study abstract reports the average and endpoint; Linköping University’s accessible summary describes the seedlings as growing “up to 50% more in 15 days.”

The result makes eSoil an intriguing research direction, but it applies to barley seedlings in a controlled hydroponic experiment. It does not establish equivalent results for other crops, backyard beds, field conditions, mature plants, or longer growing periods.
What later blueberry research adds—and does not show
A 2026 study examined electrical and biological stimulation in semi-hydroponic blueberry production, a different crop and intervention from the barley eSoil experiment. Combined treatments produced an 11% increase in cumulative yield, but the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The paper also notes constrained sample sizes and calls for larger trials and systematic optimization of electrical intensity, stimulation duration, and microbial dosing. The blueberry study therefore does not demonstrate a reliable yield benefit or replicate the barley result.

Can you use eSoil in a home hydroponic garden?
The available sources do not establish that eSoil is sold as a consumer product or provide operating instructions for home growers. A hobbyist can use conventional hydroponic media, but those are not substitutes for eSoil’s electrical function. For example, mineral-wool or rockwool grow cubes are used as hydroponic root supports; ordinary cubes do not provide the electrical stimulation studied in eSoil.
Linköping University describes mineral wool as non-biodegradable and energy-intensive to produce. That characterization is not a quantified lifecycle comparison between mineral wool and eSoil, and the sources do not establish eSoil’s environmental performance, durability, or cost.

What eSoil could mean for gardening
eSoil illustrates one way researchers are exploring electrically active materials alongside hydroponic growing: the substrate can support roots and participate in an experimental stimulation setup. The evidence so far supports further investigation, not a recommendation to replace ordinary garden soil or an established hydroponic medium. As Stavrinidou put it, “We can’t say that hydroponics will solve the problem of food security. But it can definitely help particularly in areas with little arable land and with harsh environmental conditions.” Linköping University
