The most directly attributable modern estimate is about $5 billion—but it is a hypothetical published in 2012, not a current bid or a verified 2026-dollar estimate. Architect Jean-Pierre Houdin’s scenario, reported by Live Science, assumed modern vehicles, cranes and helicopters, a workforce of 1,500 to 2,000, and roughly five years of construction. It concerns the Great Pyramid of Khufu, not all the pyramids at Giza.
What the roughly $5 billion estimate includes
In a 2012 Live Science report, architect Jean-Pierre Houdin estimated that building the Great Pyramid with stone-carrying vehicles, cranes and helicopters would cost on the order of $5 billion. The scenario called for about 1,500 to 2,000 workers and around five years. The report says Houdin based the comparison on manpower and the cost of constructing the Hoover Dam during the Great Depression. Read the Live Science report.
“On the order of” matters: this is a broad, dated scenario, not a quantity survey, contractor proposal or fully specified project budget. The report does not establish a current-dollar equivalent or itemize costs for land, permits, safety, environmental controls, infrastructure, design or other project requirements. It should not be presented as a precise price for a build starting today.
Why rebuilding it would be a major construction project
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities identifies the Great Pyramid as Khufu’s tomb and gives its original height as 146.5 meters. The ministry estimates that its construction took 10 to 20 years. Its core was local limestone; the original high-quality casing limestone came from Tura and was transported by boat. The Smithsonian reports that pyramid blocks average more than two tons, with some weighing as much as fifteen tons. A modern project would need to plan for quarrying or sourcing, loading, transport, lifting and placement at scale. The $5 billion scenario does not provide enough detail to determine how closely it accounts for those activities or for reproducing the original casing and finish. What would make a modern estimate higher or lower?
A defensible estimate would first define what “build the pyramid” means. Choices about historical fidelity, construction site, sourcing and haul distances, schedule, workforce and equipment could materially change the budget. So could whether the project includes only the monument or also the enabling works and obligations around it.

- Stone and finish: A project using local core stone and a historically similar Tura limestone casing would have different sourcing and transport needs from one using substitute materials.
- Site and logistics: Quarry location, haul routes, transport distance, site access and foundation work affect the work plan.
- Construction method: The equipment, temporary works, lifting sequence and labor plan depend on the chosen method.
- Schedule and project obligations: A defined timeline, safety requirements, permits, environmental controls and supporting infrastructure would need to be costed for the actual location.
Because Houdin’s report does not itemize these assumptions, it cannot tell a reader how much each choice would add or subtract. There is no reliable current-dollar total or formal published bid for an exact modern replica established by the cited sources.

The precise method used to build the Great Pyramid remains uncertain. The ministry’s monument page says there is no certain information about exactly how it was built. Published studies examine proposed mechanisms rather than presenting one universally confirmed construction blueprint: a PalArch paper models levering and the coordination of quarrying and hauling, while a 2026 study in npj Heritage Science presents a computational framework for evaluating an edge-integrated, multi-ramp model. That uncertainty matters to cost because a budget depends on a build sequence and its equipment, labor and temporary works. Houdin’s construction ideas should be treated as proposals, not as a confirmed account of the ancient method or a settled basis for pricing a replica.
Worker counts also vary by source and claim. The 2012 Live Science report describes the ancient pyramid as built by 4,000 workers over 20 years. The Smithsonian, discussing Herodotus’ account, reports 100,000 workers working three months a year for 20 years and notes that modern labor estimates tend to be smaller. These are differently attributed accounts, not figures to average or treat as a settled consensus. They do not change the central limitation: Houdin’s roughly $5 billion figure is a historical hypothetical, not a current, itemized estimate.
