Thriving in the Flood: Best Plants for Waterlogged Yards

Waterlogged soil can deprive roots of oxygen. Check drainage first, then match wet-tolerant trees, shrubs, or perennials to your climate, soil, light, and saturation pattern.

For a waterlogged yard, choose plants only after identifying how wet the site stays: consistently moist soil, a low spot that holds water, and a high water table are different conditions. Minnesota Extension examples include river birch, alder, willow, swamp rose, sedges, swamp milkweed and Joe-Pye weed—but the right choice depends on local climate, sunlight, soil, mature size, and the depth and duration of saturation. Persistent drainage trouble may need a site assessment, not just a plant change.

Why waterlogged soil can harm plants

Soil can contain plenty of water and still be a poor environment for roots. Air normally occupies some of the spaces between soil particles; when those spaces remain saturated, roots may not get the oxygen they need. University of Minnesota Extension notes that “standing water or a high water table means low oxygen content in the soil.” Plants in poorly drained ground may establish slowly, lack vigor, or decline.

That is why “likes moist soil” does not automatically mean “will thrive in standing water.” Match a plant to the actual wetness of the site, rather than treating all damp areas alike.

Check the site before choosing plants

Test drainage

For a preliminary drainage check, Minnesota Extension’s tree-and-shrub guidance recommends digging an 18-inch hole, filling it with water, and leaving it overnight. If water remains the next morning, the site has a drainage problem. Do not run this test after heavy rain or before the ground has thawed in spring. This is a Minnesota Extension guideline, not a universal engineering assessment.

  • A Practical Garden Watering Tool: A helpful addition to your garden, orchard, or landscape watering setup, this root watering spike is designed for trees, shrubs, fruit trees, and large outdoor plants. It can be used as a deep root feeder or as a soil aerator to help create channels for water, nutrients, and air. For dry or compacted soil, loosen or pre-water the area before use.

Look beyond the hole

A hard pan over a permeable layer may allow drainage improvements around a planting hole. If there is no permeable layer below, Minnesota Extension says a tile system may be needed and calls for professional design. Persistent standing water, a high water table, or a drainage issue affecting structures is a reason to seek qualified site advice instead of assuming plants will solve it.

Before selecting species, note the site’s sunlight, soil type, local climate and hardiness, how deep and how long water stands, and how large plants can become. Residential constraints matter too: buildings, septic systems, drain fields, wells, and buried utilities can limit where planting or drainage work belongs.

Plants to consider for wet yards

The following examples come from Minnesota Extension sources. They are starting points for Minnesota and comparable climates, not a guarantee of suitability elsewhere. Confirm local hardiness, native status, availability, mature size, and tolerance for your site’s particular saturation conditions with a local extension office or native-plant nursery.

Plant type Examples What to check
Trees River birch, larch, hackberry, bicolor oak, red maple Confirm local hardiness, available space at maturity, and whether the tree suits the duration and depth of saturation.
Shrubs Silverberry, willow, alder, leatherwood, swamp rose, elderberry Match the species and variety to the site; wet-soil tolerance and preferences differ.
Rain-garden perennials and grasses Sedges, swamp milkweed, Joe-Pye weed, aster Verify suitability for your region, sunlight, and the wetness pattern of the planting area.

Choose for the exact wet setting

Some Minnesota shoreland recommendations illustrate why the details matter: alder prefers moist, cool soil; winterberry prefers moist, acidic soil and grows well in wet ground near ponds or streams; and willow varieties differ, with some suited to wet areas. These preferences are not interchangeable, and a plant that suits a pond edge may not suit a seasonally wet lawn depression.

Could a rain garden fit the problem?

A rain garden is a planted depression designed to collect runoff from places such as roofs, driveways, streets, and sidewalks. Minnesota Extension describes rain gardens as a way to support habitat while filtering stormwater. They can be useful when runoff is the issue, but they are not a universal fix for a high water table or persistent drainage problem.

In its 2024 Minnesota guidance, Extension gives a quick filtration check using a wide hole 10 inches deep: if water is gone within 48 hours, the article considers the site suitable for its local example. The same article describes 100–300 square feet as a typical rain-garden size, with depth examples varying by soil type. These are Minnesota-specific planning figures, not national design standards. Check local guidance and site conditions before using them.

How to make a practical plant choice

  1. Describe the wetness: Is the soil merely moist, wet after storms, or regularly under standing water? Record how long water remains and how deep it gets.
  2. Check the growing conditions: Note sunlight, soil, local climate and hardiness, and the mature size the site can accommodate.
  3. Choose the planting role: Consider whether the area is a wet yard depression, a shoreline, or a rain garden collecting runoff; these are not identical settings.
  4. Verify local fit: Ask a local extension office or native-plant nursery about species suitability, native status, and availability.
  5. Address the underlying drainage issue: If water persists or affects the property, get a site assessment rather than relying on planting alone.
