There is no single best multitool for everyone. Match the tool to the repairs and cutting tasks you actually handle, then weigh its size, implement layout and blade features against how you plan to carry it. For a well-rounded, plier-based option, the Leatherman Wave Plus is a strong candidate; a screwdriver-focused or marine-specific tool may suit other work better.
What to look for in a multitool
A multitool is a portable backup for quick fixes, not a substitute for a proper toolbox. Gear Patrol’s guide, published March 11, 2024, puts it plainly: “the multi-tool shouldn’t replace the toolbox; it should complement it.” On a construction site or at home, that distinction matters: a compact tool can handle an adjustment or small repair, while demanding or repeated work calls for the dedicated tool.
- Start with your tasks: Decide whether pliers, wire cutters, screwdrivers, scissors, a saw, a file or a particular specialty implement is most useful to you.
- Check the layout: Consider whether the blade opens from outside the handles, how the pliers deploy, whether the tools lock, and whether the driver fits the fasteners you commonly encounter.
- Be realistic about carry: A full-size tool may offer more capability, but its weight and bulk can make it less practical for everyday carry.
- Account for the environment: For marine work, corrosion considerations and task-specific implements deserve extra attention.
A high tool count alone does not tell you whether a multitool is right for your work. Access, handling and the implements you will actually use are just as important.

When a different layout may suit you better
Choose the Gerber Center-Drive for a screwdriver-oriented design
Gear Patrol names the Center-Drive its “Best Screwdriver Multi-Tool,” and West Marine highlights the driver’s position on the tool’s centerline. West Marine also describes pliers that slide out of the handle. If screwdriving is a frequent task, inspect the driver arrangement and confirm it suits the fasteners you use; the category label alone does not establish that it will outperform other tools for your needs.
Consider the Victorinox SwissTool Spirit X for sail and canvas work
West Marine recommends the Spirit X for sailors doing sail and canvas work who value precision, while Gear Patrol calls it “Most Ergonomic Multi-Tool.” Those are useful points of comparison for marine tasks, not a general-purpose verdict. In a saltwater environment, also consider corrosion and how you will maintain the tool.

Blade access, locking and carrying
Blade access and locking can make a difference in convenience and safe handling, but the cited sources do not establish one mechanism as best for everyone. Before buying, check how the blade opens, how it locks and releases, and whether the tool can be carried in the way you expect.
Check applicable local laws and carrier restrictions before carrying a blade-equipped multitool, especially when travelling. Gear Patrol notes that a knife-free version may be more suitable for international travel; the guidance here does not establish the law or airline policy for any particular destination or carrier.
