Ginga’s standout feature is its leafy courtyard, but Kate Emery’s December 2024 review found the newly opened Mount Hawthorn cafe’s service and food less consistent than its setting. The garden makes it an appealing place to pause for coffee or tea; the meal, she concluded, was more of a mixed bag.
Why the garden is the main attraction
In her PerthNow review, published 31 December 2024, food reviewer Kate Emery describes a spacious, sun-dappled courtyard with abundant greenery and a central fish pond. Much of its character, she says, remained from the venue’s previous life as Casa Bianchi. Inside, pale wood and booths create a light, bright alternative to the garden.

Emery’s praise is a personal assessment, not a measured or independently ranked claim that Ginga has Perth’s prettiest garden. Her review makes the practical point clear: the setting is the strongest reason to visit, particularly for tea or coffee.
How the service and food measured up
Friendly service, uneven follow-through
Ginga had opened in November, about a month before the review. Emery found staff friendly, but reported that she had to ask for cutlery and water on both visits. Her description captures the tension: “Ginga really is a beautiful spot with a kitchen and service staff still finding their feet just one month in.”

Good elements, but dishes that fell short in different ways
- Scrambled eggs on toast: Emery liked the scrambled eggs, though one poached egg was overcooked.
- Veg fusion breakfast: The mushrooms, hash browns, beans and haloumi were well cooked, but she felt the ingredients did not come together as a satisfying dish.
- Pancakes: They were fluffy and properly cooked, but the review found the condiments insufficient. Emery and a friend, with different preferences for syrup and cream, were both left wanting more.
These are specific criticisms rather than a blanket dismissal of the kitchen: the review’s concern is that sound individual components did not consistently combine into a complete, well-balanced meal.

Emery gave Ginga 12.5/20. That score sits alongside a clear split in her assessment: an unusually appealing garden, friendly but inconsistent service, and food with promising parts that did not always come together.
