The crane behind the 2024 headline is Mammoet’s SK6000 ring crane, a land-based machine with a manufacturer-stated maximum capacity of 6,000 tonnes. That figure is a maximum rating for a suitable configuration—not a promise that it can lift 6,000 tonnes at any height or radius. Mammoet later reported completing the crane’s testing and preparing it for shipment to a first project in early 2025; a March 2026 company fleet description also lists it. Those announcements do not establish when its first project lift was completed.
What is the SK6000?
The SK6000 is a large land-based ring crane built by Mammoet for heavy lifting in major industrial and infrastructure projects. Mammoet describes it as a 6,000-tonne-class crane. The ring configuration allows the crane to handle heavy loads around a central working area, while its modular, containerized design is intended to support transport and deployment on project sites.
The phrase “this year” in the original headline referred to 2024, when Indian Defence Review published it on October 22. At that point, Mammoet said the crane was undergoing testing in the Netherlands and expected to be ready for its first project later that year. In a subsequent announcement, Mammoet said testing was complete and the crane was being prepared for shipment to a first project in early 2025. In March 2026, the company included the SK6000 in a description of its equipment fleet. The available announcements do not confirm the date or details of a first completed project lift. How much can it lift, and how high?
Mammoet’s 6,000-tonne figure is the crane’s maximum stated capacity under a suitable configuration. A crane’s usable capacity changes with factors such as configuration, lift height, working radius and site conditions, so the headline capacity should not be read as a capacity available at every point in its operating envelope.

Mammoet gives a separate example of the SK6000 lifting 3,000 tonnes to 220 metres. Its equipment page lists a main mast up to 171 metres and a total lifting height of 274 metres when fitted with the fixed jib. These are different measures and configurations, not interchangeable descriptions of one lift. The figures are manufacturer-published specifications and examples. Mammoet’s launch announcement; SK6000 equipment specifications.
What does deployment require?
The crane’s scale affects more than the lift itself. Mammoet says it uses 4,200 tonnes of ballast and can produce maximum ground-bearing pressure of 30 tonnes per square metre. Those manufacturer-published figures indicate why project teams must plan transport, assembly, ground conditions and supporting works carefully. They do not determine the preparation required at any particular site; that depends on the actual crane configuration and project conditions.

Mammoet designed the SK6000 for containerized transport and project deployment. Its modular approach is intended to make it possible to assemble major components away from a final work area or in parallel with other site activity, then lift them into place. Mammoet identifies offshore wind, oil and gas, and nuclear construction as intended applications. The company presents modular construction as a way to reduce work at the final site, but these stated aims are not independently measured savings or proof of completed SK6000 work in each sector. What testing has Mammoet reported?
Mammoet says the SK6000 passed a test program overseen by Lloyd’s Register. The company reports functional testing and structural and stability tests in which components were subjected to 125% overload. Tests covered main-mast configurations from 127 to 171 metres. These are reported by the crane’s manufacturer; they describe its announced test program rather than an independently published comparison with other cranes. Can the SK6000 operate electrically?
Mammoet has also reported testing fully electric operation. The company says the crane can draw power from the grid or, where needed, use batteries or hydrogen generators. In its reported battery demonstration, two 600-kWh Bredenoord battery boxes were connected in series, providing 1,200 kWh. Mammoet describes the resulting operation as zero-emission on site; that claim concerns the operation it described, not the emissions associated with manufacturing, transporting or deploying the crane over its full lifecycle. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it the world’s largest crane?
Mammoet calls the SK6000 the world’s largest land-based crane, and its stated 6,000-tonne maximum capacity is the central figure behind that description. “Largest” depends on what is being compared: crane category, rated capacity, lifting capacity at a particular height and radius, or another dimension such as height or outreach. The published SK6000 specifications alone do not establish a like-for-like comparison with every other crane, so the clearest description is Mammoet’s 6,000-tonne land-based ring crane—not an unqualified claim that it is larger than every crane of every type.
