Before installing rooftop solar, check the roof, understand your electricity use and utility’s export rules, compare complete proposals, and confirm who will handle permits and grid connection. Those details—not panel count alone—determine whether your home is a good candidate and what the project may cost or save. This guide is for U.S. homeowners; local requirements, utility rates, and incentives vary.
Is your home suitable for solar panels?
A qualified installer needs to assess the roof and site before recommending a system. Roof age and condition matter: if replacement or major repairs are likely soon, evaluate that work before panels are installed. Later roof work can require removing and reinstalling the array. Ask a roofing professional or installer to assess the roof rather than relying on an online image.
Check the roof and surroundings
- Find out when the roof was installed or last replaced, and whether repairs or replacement are approaching.
- Have the installer assess structural suitability and the usable roof area.
- Review shade from trees, chimneys, nearby buildings, and other obstructions.
- Ask how roof direction, pitch, and local sunlight affect the proposed design and production.
Online solar maps can help screen a property, but they do not replace a detailed site assessment. If your roof is unsuitable, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that community or shared solar may be an alternative; availability and terms depend on your location. See the DOE’s Homeowner’s Guide to Solar.
Will solar save you money?
There is no reliable universal savings figure or payback period for every home. The outcome depends on your electricity use, system size and output, roof and sunlight, purchase or lease terms, utility rates, and how the utility compensates you for electricity sent to the grid. Export credits may be worth less than the retail rate and can differ by utility territory.

Start with your electricity bills and utility rules
- Review a full year of electricity bills so seasonal use is represented.
- Consider future changes in demand, such as an electric vehicle, heat pump, or home addition.
- Ask the installer to show how the proposed system size and estimated annual production relate to your bills, and to explain the assumptions behind the estimate.
- Ask your utility which rate plan applies, how excess generation is valued, whether export credits can change, and which interconnection application is required.
For a useful financial comparison, include the full installed price, financing obligations, utility tariff and export-credit rules, production estimate, maintenance expectations, and any local incentives you have confirmed. The DOE’s homeowner guide explains the factors that affect savings; it does not establish a current generic savings amount for every household.
How should you compare solar proposals?
Get more than one proposal where possible, and compare what each covers rather than focusing only on monthly payments or panel count. Verify that contractors are licensed and insured for your locality. The DOE’s consumer guide to going solar suggests looking for reputable certification such as NABCEP.

| Compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| System design and production | System size, equipment, expected annual production, and the assumptions behind the estimate. |
| Price and payment | Total cash price, loan or other financing costs and terms, or lease or power-purchase agreement obligations. |
| Ownership and home sale | Who owns the system, who receives its benefits, and what happens to the agreement if you sell the home. |
| Warranties and service | What is covered, for how long, and whom to contact if the system needs service. |
| Project responsibilities | Who coordinates roof work, submits permits, arranges inspection, applies for utility interconnection, and obtains permission to operate. |
| Schedule | Estimated timing for design, approvals, installation, inspection, and utility connection. |
Read the complete contract and clarify any responsibility that is not explicit. Buying, financing, leasing, and power-purchase agreements differ in ownership and obligations; the right arrangement depends on your finances, roof, electricity use, and local utility rules.
What approvals and steps come before the system operates?
Permitting and inspection are normal parts of a rooftop solar project. The DOE says, “Generally, local governments require solar installers to obtain a permit for rooftop panels before they can be installed.” After installation, a local-government professional inspects the array. The utility must then complete the required interconnection process before the system can operate on the grid.

- Max Battery Voltage: 32V
- Site assessment and design: The installer evaluates the roof, electricity use, and system layout.
- Contract: Review the design, cost, terms, warranties, and responsibilities.
- Local permit: Confirm who applies and whether approval is required before work begins.
- Installation: The contractor installs the approved system.
- Local inspection: The relevant authority checks the completed installation.
- Utility interconnection and permission to operate: The utility completes its process before grid operation begins.
Requirements, fees, and processing times vary by jurisdiction, and local backlogs can affect timing. Ask your installer for the process and schedule specific to your address; physical installation does not mean you can immediately export electricity. The DOE’s permitting and inspection guide describes the process and local variation.

As of October 8, 2026, the IRS says the Residential Clean Energy Credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. The IRS describes the 30% credit as applying to qualifying property installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025; do not assume a 2026-or-later installation qualifies for that federal credit under the older rules.

For qualifying installations within that period, the IRS lists solar electric panels and certain installation labor among potentially eligible costs. Traditional roofing and structural components generally do not qualify simply because they support panels. The IRS says the credit is claimed for the year the property is installed and advises keeping receipts and installation records. Check the current IRS guidance or consult a tax professional about your own circumstances. State, utility, and local programs are separate; verify their current availability and terms with the relevant authority.
