The wall design behind the claim is Nave, a passive-cooling concept by designer Yael Issacharov. Its hollow, porous terracotta tiles are intended to let water evaporate, cooling the wall and, in turn, the surrounding room. A 2022 report described Nave as under development—not as a verified product on sale—and did not report measured cooling results.

What is Nave?

Nave is a building-integrated wall concept, not a conventional air conditioner. Fast Company described the system in a report published October 8, 2022, when Issacharov was developing it for wider practical adoption. That report does not establish whether Nave has since launched, attracted funding, or become available to buy.

The concept draws on the Palestinian jarrah, a traditional porous terracotta drinking-water container. Water seeps through the clay and evaporates from its surface; the same basic process is intended to cool Nave’s wall.

How the terracotta wall is intended to cool a room

  1. Water enters the hollow tiles. Nave’s building blocks are described as hollow terracotta tiles with a porous structure.
  2. Water evaporates through the pores. Evaporation takes heat from the water and the wall surface.
  3. The cooler wall affects the indoor space. The design aims for the cooled wall to lower the temperature of the surrounding room without drawing electrical power.

This is passive evaporative cooling: the cooling effect depends on water evaporating, rather than on an electrically powered compressor or fan. The 2022 report does not specify a complete installation or operating procedure, including how the tiles would be supplied with water or maintained.

Climate and building conditions matter

Issacharov told Fast Company that the concept performs best in desert climates. That is consistent with the underlying mechanism: evaporation is more effective in hot, dry air than in humid air. The report does not provide an independently verified climate-performance map, so it cannot establish how well Nave would work in a particular location or building.

Tile quantity and dimensions were described as site-specific. That makes the concept a design-and-building-envelope question, not a universal retrofit specification. A project would need to account for local humidity, water supply, wall construction, and the amount of cooling required; the cited report does not provide engineering details or installation guidance for those decisions.

AC Infinity Passive Ventilation Grille 17", Aluminum, White
  • Designed to be installed into doors, cabinets, and walls to help increase ventilation.
  • Can also be used in conjunction with a fan system to act as an intake or exhaust vent.
  • Ventilation grille design maximizes airflow while maintaining frame's structural integrity.
  • Features a CNC machined aluminum frame and matching flat screw heads, painted matte white.
  • Kit includes (4) wood mounting screws and (4) machine mounting screws with nuts.

What the reported temperature target does—and does not—show

Issacharov said that enough tiles could bring a space to “approximately 77F and 30-50% humidity.” This was her stated target in the 2022 report, not a documented test result. Fast Company reported no controlled trial, field measurement, or quantified reduction in room temperature for Nave.

Accordingly, the available evidence does not show that a Nave wall will bring a house to that temperature or humidity, or how much it would change conditions from a given starting point. The reported claim that the wall can cool without electricity describes the design’s intended operation, not a verified performance guarantee.

Mtlavishness 10W Solar Panel Fan Kit for Wall Mounted Greenhouse Ventilation
  • 10W Solar Fan System: This version uses a 10W solar panel to power the ventilation fan directly from sunlight. It is intended for small chicken coops, greenhouses, sheds, pet houses and similar spaces where daytime air movement can help reduce trapped heat and stale air
  • Wall Mounted Ventilation: The fan can be installed on a suitable wall or opening to push warm indoor air outward and support incoming cooler air. This makes it useful for compact structures where passive vents alone may not provide enough circulation during hot sunny periods
  • Weatherproof Motor Coating: The fan motor is treated with a protective coating to help reduce rain related short circuit or damage during outdoor use. This construction supports installation on exposed structures while the solar panel remains positioned for useful sunlight
  • Speed Follows Sunlight: Because the fan runs directly from solar power without stored energy, its speed depends on the strength of the sun. Direct bright sunlight produces faster operation, while cloud cover or shade can slow the fan or cause it to stop
  • Easy Solar Connection: Setup involves connecting the panel to the fan and placing the panel in direct sunlight. The kit can be used on greenhouses, coops, sheds, dog houses, barns, tree houses or loft areas where simple daytime ventilation is needed

How it compares with other passive-cooling research

Other passive systems show why results must be tied to a specific design and climate. Their published figures are not Nave results and should not be treated as a direct performance comparison.

System Reported result Why it is not a Nave result
Residential Trombe-wall project in St. Katherine, Egypt Forbes reported in 2016 that the separate project reduced heating energy by 94% and cooling energy by 73%. The article attributed the work to Lund University and the German University in Cairo. It used a different passive-wall design, with vents, glazing, insulation blankets, and shutters—not Nave’s porous terracotta evaporation concept. The figures do not establish Nave’s performance.
Radiative-cooling device tested in the Atacama Desert and Cambridge MIT News reported in 2019 that the separate device cooled 13°C under full sunlight at solar noon in the Atacama Desert and just under 10°C in Cambridge. The device used insulating polyethylene aerogel to block sunlight while allowing infrared heat to escape. It was not a terracotta wall and provides no test evidence for Nave.

The Trombe-wall account also describes a project developed with the local community as a living lab; lead researcher Dr. Marwa Dabaieh said, “I look for traditional techniques and adapt them to contemporary problems.” That work is a separate example of adapting building design to local conditions, not evidence about Nave.

What homeowners and builders can conclude

  • It is a concept, not a confirmed product listing. The cited account described development in 2022; it does not verify present-day availability, pricing, installers, or funding.
  • Its cooling mechanism needs suitable conditions. Dry air favors evaporation, while the source does not establish performance in humid climates.
  • No measured Nave performance is reported. The temperature and humidity figures are the designer’s target, not independently validated outcomes.
  • It is not a plug-in substitute for air conditioning on the evidence available. The report does not quantify cooling capacity, specify a water-use rate, or show what indoor conditions it can reliably maintain.

A porous terracotta water jug may demonstrate evaporation at the surface of clay, but it is not a room-cooling wall or a substitute for a building-scale system. For a construction decision, Nave should be treated as an interesting design proposal until project-specific performance, installation details, and current availability are documented.
