Compare the actual package, vehicle clearances, site-specific load documentation, anchoring, local approval requirements, and total installed cost before ordering. The examples and rules below are primarily U.S.-based; permit and zoning requirements vary by jurisdiction.
What does a carport kit include?
There is no standard package. Some kits include roof sheets, a structural frame, fasteners, drawings, pre-cut parts, and assembly instructions. Others are frame-only and require you to source roofing separately. Check the bill of materials for the exact model rather than relying on the words “carport kit.”
For example, Mueller lists roof sheets, a square-tube and purlin frame, screws and bolts, erection drawings, pre-cut parts, and instructions among its offerings; trim and a galvanized frame are optional. Its category page also lists 12 x 20, 20 x 20, and 24 x 24 sizes. By contrast, Steel Shade Kits describes its carport product as a structural frame without roofing; the company says its purlins are designed for metal or asphalt-shingle roofing sourced separately. Those are vendor-specific product descriptions, not universal compatibility advice.
Before comparing prices, confirm whether the quoted package includes the roof covering, anchors, trim, delivery, and any installation service. Mueller says it does not provide foundation or erection services.

How do you choose the right carport size?
Measure the vehicles and the space they need to enter, park, and exit. A nominal vehicle count is not a guarantee of usable clearance: account for vehicle length and height, open doors, post locations, turning space, and the driveway approach.
Mueller gives 12 x 20 as a single-car example, 20 x 20 as an example for two standard cars, and 24 x 24 as an option for larger vehicles or potentially several smaller vehicles. These are manufacturer examples, not fit guarantees. Compare the usable dimensions and entry height in the selected plan with your vehicles and site.
- Measure each vehicle, including mirrors and roof-mounted equipment where relevant.
- Mark the proposed post locations and check door opening and walking clearance.
- Allow room to turn into the structure and maneuver out without striking posts or nearby obstacles.
- Confirm height and width limits with local officials before ordering; zoning rules may restrict dimensions or placement.
How much does a metal carport kit cost?
Mueller’s page accessed in 2026 displayed sale prices of $1,095 for a 12 x 20 kit, $1,795 for a 20 x 20 kit, and $2,595 for a 24 x 24 kit. The prices exclude tax and freight, may change without notice, and are single-vendor kit-only examples—not installed-cost estimates or market averages. Check the current listing and exact scope before relying on a price.

Do you need a permit for a carport?
There is no single U.S. permit rule that applies to every carport. Contact the local planning, zoning, and building departments before ordering. Ask whether an open-sided structure is regulated, what setbacks and height or area limits apply, whether a building permit is required, what plans or engineering documents are accepted, and whether inspections are part of the process. Requirements can differ between nearby jurisdictions.

West Valley City, Utah, illustrates how specific a local process can be: its page says manufactured-component carports need approved plans on file that are stamped by an engineer and/or include an ICC evaluation report approval number. The city describes an application signed by the installing contractor, a site plan, a design-criteria form, and footing and final inspections. Those requirements are a local example, not a nationwide checklist. See West Valley City’s carport permit information for its current process.
Mueller warns that its carports are not represented as meeting any particular code or engineering criteria and advises buyers to check local code before ordering. Do not assume a product listing or a vendor’s general rating will satisfy your building authority.

What wind and snow loads should a carport handle?
Use the requirements that apply to your address and the exact proposed configuration. A product’s wind or snow figure is not, by itself, proof that the structure is suitable for your site. Ratings can depend on location, exposure, configuration, anchoring, and local code. Ask the manufacturer for documentation applicable to your site and have the building authority confirm whether it is acceptable.

VersaTube’s 12 ft x 20 ft Classic Carport page states a wind rating of up to 130 MPH and a ground snow load of 41.3 PSF. Those are product-specific manufacturer figures, subject to the page’s assumptions that the frame is fully and securely assembled and anchored, and its caveat that values may change by location. The company says local-code conformance remains the purchaser’s responsibility. Verify the selected model, configuration, and documentation with local officials rather than treating these figures as a general specification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should the carport be anchored?
Anchoring and foundation choices must match the kit instructions, site conditions, and accepted design documents. Before selecting an anchor or surface, confirm the soil and existing surface, drainage, local frost conditions, and design forces that apply at the site. Do not assume that an anchor suitable for one ground or slab condition will work for another.
VersaTube describes ground anchors set in concrete and wedge anchors for concrete slabs or footings. These are examples from that manufacturer’s product guidance, not a substitute for the selected kit’s instructions or local approval. A Gazebo Penguin manual advises using a level, flat, solid surface, checking local requirements before purchase or assembly, securing the structure, and clearing snow regularly. Follow the instructions and accepted engineering documents for your specific kit.

What should you compare before buying?
Compare complete project requirements rather than just advertised dimensions or price.
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Dimensions and clearance | What are the usable width, length, and entry height? Where are the posts? Will the vehicles, doors, and turning path fit? |
| Package scope | Are the frame, roofing, fasteners, drawings, anchors, and trim included? Are parts delivered together? |
| Design documentation | What wind and snow criteria apply to the site and configuration? Are engineering documents or an evaluation report available and accepted locally? |
| Foundation and anchoring | What surface and anchors does the design require? Who prepares the site and installs footings or anchors? |
| Total cost and work | What will freight, tax, roofing, permits, preparation, tools, labor, and installation add? |
| Materials and warranty | What frame and coating are supplied? What roofing gauge and finish apply? What are the warranty terms, exclusions, and conditions? |
Mueller’s category page describes a 45-year limited paint warranty for its listed 26-gauge bright-white roof sheets. Confirm the current warranty, covered components, and exclusions for the specific product you are considering. VersaTube also lists limited warranty terms for its own frame and sheet metal; check the selected model’s current terms.
Can you assemble a carport kit yourself?
DIY assembly may be practical if you have a prepared, level site, suitable help, tools, and a plan for working safely with large components. The final kit instructions govern; a manufacturer’s general tool list or time estimate does not guarantee the same needs or schedule at every site.
Mueller lists these tools and supplies as potentially useful, while noting that some items may not be needed:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Drill, screw gun, or power wrench.
- Wrenches, level, and measuring tape.
- Ladder and sheet-metal snips.
- Appropriate safety equipment.
VersaTube says many units may be assembled in one day, or two days for larger units, with help from friends or family after site preparation. Its estimate depends on weather, available help, size, and individual schedule; treat it as planning guidance, not a promised completion time.
When is a carport kit not the right choice?
A kit may not be a good fit if the proposed location cannot meet local setbacks or approval conditions, the manufacturer cannot provide documentation the authority will accept, the site cannot support the required foundation, or the required vehicle clearance does not fit the available space. If you need a fully enclosed, lockable building or a structure designed around unusual site demands, ask local officials and qualified building professionals whether another building type is more appropriate before buying a kit.
Quick Recap

- Local officials: Is a permit required? What zoning, setback, height, area, and inspection rules apply? Which plans or engineering documents will be accepted?

- Installer or contractor, if applicable: Who handles site preparation, foundation work, assembly, and inspections? What is excluded from the quote?
- For your budget: What are the freight, tax, roofing, permit, foundation, tool, and labor costs in addition to the kit price?
