This shop-built thin-strip ripper is a setup jig for positioning a table-saw fence to make repeated strips. The WOOD Magazine design uses a plywood base, an adjustable miter-slot guide and a knob. Its instructions have you set the jig, position the fence, then remove the jig before cutting. The design is not proof that an operation is safe for every saw or workpiece; follow your saw’s manual and safety instructions.
What the jig does
WOOD Magazine describes ripping thin stock between a table-saw blade and fence as potentially risky and presents the jig as a way to set up repeated, uniform strips. The jig’s chamfered edge establishes the intended strip-width gap from the blade, while the rip fence is positioned against the stock. The jig is removed before the saw is started.
This is the magazine’s description of the design and procedure, not independently verified safety testing. It does not establish that the jig prevents kickback or makes a cut safe. Consult the manual and safety guidance for your particular saw before using it.

Build and fit the guide to your saw
The guide runs in the saw’s miter-gauge slot, so its fit is specific to the machine. WOOD Magazine gives 3/8 inch by 3/4 inch as an example guide size, but directs readers to size the guide to their own slot. Do not assume those dimensions will fit another saw. The article attaches the guide to the plywood base with washers and wing nuts so the base can be adjusted through its slots.

Set up and use the jig
- Fit the guide: Make the miter-slot guide to fit your saw’s slot snugly. Check the saw manual for machine-specific setup requirements.
- Set the gap: With the wing nuts loosened, position the base so its chamfered edge is parallel to the blade and the gap corresponds to the strip width you want. Tighten the wing nuts to hold the setting.
- Position the fence: Place the stock beside the jig and move the rip fence against the stock, following the magazine article’s setup illustration.
- Remove the jig before cutting: The article directs you to take the jig out of the miter-gauge slot before starting the saw and cutting the strip.
- Use a pushstick: Keep your hands away from the blade and use a pushstick as the article instructs. Follow your saw manufacturer’s procedures for the cut.
- Reset for another strip: The article describes returning the jig to the miter-gauge slot to set up the next strip. Recheck the setting and follow the machine’s instructions each time.
How to interpret the article’s stopping point
WOOD Magazine says its authors stopped repeating the process when they were uncomfortable with the distance between the blade and fence, giving about 3/4 inch as their stopping point. That is their stated comfort limit, not a universal safety threshold or a recommendation for every saw, stock or operator. Use the guidance and limits in your own saw’s manual; do not treat the example as permission to make a cut that the manual does not support.
What to check before choosing or building a jig
- Slot compatibility: The guide must fit your saw’s miter-gauge slot; the example dimensions may not fit yours.
- Adjustment range: Confirm the design can be set for the strip widths you need without exceeding your machine’s instructions.
- Repeatability: The jig is intended to help reset a gap for repeated strips; the article does not report measured accuracy or comparative test results.
- Setup sequence: In this design, the jig positions the fence and is removed before the cut.
- Safety instructions: Use the pushstick and the procedures specified by your saw’s manufacturer. The magazine article is not a substitute for a saw manual or safety standard.
