The thriller, filler, spiller method is a simple way to arrange plants in a container: use a tall focal plant, surround it with plants that fill the pot, and add trailing plants that spill over the edge. Choose plants with compatible light and water needs first; then arrange them for the container’s viewing angle.
What do “thriller,” “filler,” and “spiller” mean?
The terms describe three design roles, not a fixed recipe or a requirement to use exactly three species. A plant can sometimes perform more than one role.
- Thriller: A tall, bold plant that draws the eye and gives the arrangement height. Grasses and salvia are examples identified by the University of Illinois Extension.
- Filler: A medium-sized plant that occupies the body of the planting around the focal plant. Examples include euphorbia, lantana, and heuchera, according to Illinois Extension.
- Spiller: A trailing plant that hangs over the rim and softens the container’s edge. Illinois Extension examples include bacopa, ivy, sweet potato vine, and calibrachoa.
These roles help create contrast in height, fullness, and movement. They are a flexible design guide rather than a rule that overrides whether plants can thrive together.
How should you position the plants?
Arrange the focal plant according to how people will see the container. For a pot viewed mainly from one side, place the thriller toward the back. For a freestanding container viewed from all sides, place it near the center. Penn State Extension describes this same placement approach in its container gardening guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Superior Aeration and Drainage for Healthier Roots:Thick nonwoven fabric allows excellent airflow and water drainage to prevent overwatering and root rot promoting stronger plant growth
- Heavy Duty and Reusable Construction:Durable material resists tearing and deformation making these grow bags ideal for long term use across multiple growing seasons
- Reinforced Handles for Easy Mobility:Double stitched handles provide extra strength to safely lift and move fully loaded grow bags even when filled with heavy soil
- 10 Gallon Large Growing Capacity:Generous size supports deep root development for vegetables like tomatoes potatoes peppers and herbs maximizing garden yield
- Foldable Design for Convenient Storage:Lightweight and collapsible bags save space when not in use making them perfect for seasonal gardeners or limited storage areas
Place fillers around the thriller to build out the planting, and distribute spillers around the visible rim so their trails can hang over the edge. If the pot has a front-facing display, concentrate spillers along the sides and front rather than relying on them to trail unseen at the back. A plant may fill space and trail at once; Rutgers NJAES notes that the roles can overlap, so you do not necessarily need a separate plant for every role: Outdoor Container Gardening with Flowering and Foliage Plants.
Choose plants for the location before choosing a color scheme
Start with the spot where the container will sit. Note whether it receives full sun, partial sun, or shade, and check plant labels and local guidance for suitability. Then choose plants whose growing requirements are compatible. Missouri Extension advises matching light, soil, temperature, and water needs; color and texture are useful design choices only after those basics align. Containers can dry more quickly than in-ground beds, so consider watering needs as well as exposure. See Missouri Extension’s container gardening guidance.

- 300G THICKENED FABRIC, BUILT FOR MULTIPLE SEASONS — 300 g/m² non-woven fabric (vs. 200 g/m² or thinner on entry-level bags), so the walls hold their shape when filled and resist tearing at the seams. Each empty bag weighs 4 oz — 16 oz for the 4-pack. Fold flat and store indoors over winter and they are built to be replanted season after season 3.
- AIR-PRUNED ROOTS, NO ROOT ROT — Water drains through the whole fabric wall instead of pooling at one drainage hole, and air reaches the root ball from every side. Roots stop at the fabric edge and branch out instead of circling the pot, which is why plants in fabric bags build a denser feeder-root system than plants in plastic pots. Indoors, set the bags on a saucer or tray — the fabric drains from the base.
- DOUBLE-STITCHED HANDLES THAT DON'T RIP — Two woven webbing straps are sewn to the bag wall with a double-stitched box-X reinforcement (not cut from the same fabric as the bag body), tested to carry 180 LB. A filled 5-gallon bag of damp soil runs roughly 40–50 lbs, so the handles are the part that decides whether you can chase the sun across a patio — or not.Equipped with strong reinforced handles, easy to move the plants around your garden, patio or balcony, even when the bag is filled with soil.
- SIZED FOR HERBS, GREENS, STRAWBERRIES & FLOWERS — 12.2" across and 10.2" deep is the right root room for basil, mint, cilantro, rosemary, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, marigolds and compact peppers. Growing full-size tomatoes, potatoes or squash? Size up to our 7, 10 or 15 gallon bags instead — those crops need more depth than a 5-gallon bag can give.
- FOLDS FLAT — STORE THE WHOLE SET IN A DRAWER — Empty the soil, fold each bag flat, and all 4 stack down to about 1.96inch — they slide into a cupboard gap or under a shelf instead of taking up a corner of the balcony all winter. Rigid plastic pots can't do this, which is what makes fabric bags practical for apartments and small patios.
Set up the container for healthy growth
Use a soilless growing medium intended for containers rather than assuming ordinary garden soil will work. Missouri Extension notes that ordinary soil may not drain as well in a container and can introduce weed seeds or disease pathogens. The right medium and watering routine depend on the plants and local conditions; there is no single mix recipe established for every thriller-filler-spiller planting.
Before planting, make a quick compatibility check:
- Does each plant suit the container’s sun or shade exposure?
- Do the plants have compatible water and other growing requirements?
- Will the thriller be visible from the intended viewing direction?
- Do the fillers create the fullness you want, and can the spillers trail over a visible edge?
- Are the choices appropriate for your area and the specific cultivars available?
Once those conditions are covered, use flower color, foliage, shape, and texture to create the look you want. The method’s value is in balancing vertical height, a full center, and trailing edges while keeping the plants’ needs in agreement.
