No reliable compost guidance here establishes baking soda as an odor fix. The better remedy depends on the smell: add carbon-rich brown material for an ammonia odor, or restore airflow and reduce excess moisture when compost smells musty, rotten, or sulfurous.
Should you add baking soda to compost?
These extension sources do not recommend baking soda for compost odor, and they do not directly test its effectiveness or safety in compost. Cornell Composting explains that increasing pH with lime can increase ammonia odor. Since baking soda is alkaline, that is a reason for caution around an ammonia-smelling pile—not proof that baking soda has the same effect as lime or a direct test of baking soda.
Instead, identify the odor and correct the likely underlying condition.
Match the smell to the likely problem

Fix an ammonia smell by balancing carbon and nitrogen
Cornell Composting author Tom Richard describes ammonia odor as an indicator that nitrogen is in excess and carbon or energy is limiting. Add brown, carbon-rich material and mix it through the smelly portion of the pile. Suitable examples include leaves, sawdust, wood chips, and straw. A practical target for a balanced mix is near 30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen. Cornell Cooperative Extension gives about 30:1 by weight and notes that the appropriate ratio can vary with how available the materials’ carbon and nitrogen are. Fix a musty, rotten, or sulfurous smell by restoring air
Too much moisture can fill the spaces that let air move through compost. Turn or mix the pile to open those spaces. If the material is wet, work in dry, porous bulking material so the mix can drain and stay aerated.
