Choose wood glue by the joint’s expected water exposure and the time you need to assemble it—not by a claim that one product is best for every project. Clamp time, drying time and shelf life are separate considerations, and the instructions for the specific adhesive take precedence.
Which wood glue is right for the project?
For ordinary interior woodworking, Franklin International describes Titebond Original as a general-purpose woodworking adhesive for interior use. If moisture exposure is part of the project, compare the manufacturer’s water-resistance classifications rather than assuming all wood glues perform alike.
| Product | Manufacturer’s stated water-resistance guidance | Assembly-time figures in Franklin International brochure FF1040 |
|---|---|---|
| Titebond Original | General woodworking adhesive for interior use; a Type I or Type II rating is not stated in the cited product information. | 4–6 minutes open assembly time; 10–15 minutes total assembly time. |
| Titebond II | Type II water resistant. | 3–5 minutes open assembly time; 10–15 minutes total assembly time. |
| Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue | Described as meeting the ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance specification and as waterproof. | 8–10 minutes open assembly time; 20–25 minutes total assembly time. |
The times in the table are Franklin International manufacturer specifications in brochure FF1040, whose search result was dated approximately 2019; they are not independent comparative test results. Use current packaging or technical instructions for the exact product and conditions. A Type I or Type II rating does not, by itself, establish that a particular joint or finished object is suitable for continuous immersion or every outdoor exposure. Joint fit, design and maintenance still matter.
Franklin International’s Titebond III product page states: “Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue is the first one-part, water cleanup wood glue ever offered that is proven waterproof.” The page attributes the claim to the product, not to a named individual. See the Titebond III product page for its manufacturer guidance.

How much working time is available?
“Open assembly time” is the time available to spread adhesive and bring the parts together; “total assembly time” is a separate manufacturer specification. In Franklin International’s brochure FF1040, the listed figures are 4–6 and 10–15 minutes for Titebond Original, 3–5 and 10–15 minutes for Titebond II, and 8–10 and 20–25 minutes for Titebond III, respectively. These figures describe manufacturer-listed product specifications, not a guarantee for every glue-up. The Titebond Original product page specifies its open assembly time at 70°F.
Temperature, humidity, the wood and the adhesive can affect a real assembly. Plan complicated glue-ups before applying adhesive, and consult the current instructions for the formulation you are using. The Titebond FAQ and product-specific information provide manufacturer guidance; do not treat the brochure’s assembly windows as universal workshop times.

- Provide a much stronger bond than the wood itself
- Offer excellent heat-resistance and are very easy to sand
- Are water cleanup while still wet
- Provide strong initial tack and a 30-minute clamp time
- Conform to ASTM D4236 – Non-toxic and safe to use
How long do you clamp wood glue, and when is it dry?
Open assembly time, clamp time and full drying or cure are not interchangeable. The brochure’s total assembly-time figures do not specify how long a joint should remain clamped or when it is ready for heavy machining or loading. Franklin International’s FAQ treats clamping and drying as distinct questions, and the available guidance does not establish one clamp duration or cure time suitable for every wood, adhesive and shop condition.
- Check the current label or technical instructions for the exact adhesive and follow its clamp-time requirement.
- Keep the joint supported for that specified period; do not use open or total assembly time as a substitute.
- Allow the product’s recommended drying or cure time before heavy machining or loading the joint.

Does wood need preparation before gluing?
Yes: use clean, well-fitted mating surfaces and follow the adhesive’s specific directions. Franklin International’s FAQ says that planing, jointing or sanding shortly before bonding can remove a contaminating layer and allow successful bonding. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal sanding grit, wood-moisture target or clamping pressure, so avoid treating any one such value as appropriate for every project.

Franklin International describes shelf life as a conservative estimate of the minimum period a product is expected to remain usable when stored as directed. Its FAQ says Titebond Original, II and III may remain usable beyond the stated shelf life if they remain fluid and show no drastic change in appearance. Age alone does not guarantee performance; store glue as directed and assess the product itself.
