Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your Tempstar furnace will not start, is blowing cool air, or is showing a blinking light, begin with simple checks: thermostat settings, airflow, power, and the model-specific status-code legend. Tempstar furnaces differ by series and model, so do not treat a blink-code chart or repair procedure as universal. Find the furnace model number and follow its owner’s manual and the instructions on the unit.
Start with checks that do not require opening the furnace
An older ICP/Tempstar owner’s manual recommends checking airflow and basic controls before requesting service. These are general checks only; follow the documentation for your installed model if it differs.
- Thermostat: If the furnace is not operating, confirm it is set to HEAT and its temperature setting is above the room temperature.
- Air filter: Check whether the filter is dirty. If it needs replacement, use the size and specification required by the installed filter or furnace documentation; the correct size and rating are model-dependent.
- Supply and return grilles: Make sure they are open and not blocked.
- Power: Check that the furnace’s electrical power switch is on and that its circuit breaker has not tripped.
- Access door: Check only that the blower access door is firmly in place. Do not remove panels to troubleshoot.
These checks are drawn from an older manual excerpt, not a universal procedure for every Tempstar furnace. Consult the ICP/Tempstar owner’s manual excerpt alongside the manual for your exact model.
If the furnace will not turn on
Check the thermostat, switch, breaker, airflow, and door seating listed above. If those checks do not resolve the problem, use the manual for your model or contact the company that services the furnace. Do not infer that an internal component has failed based on a no-start symptom alone.

- DEPENDABLE MERV 8 (MPR 600 / FPR 5) FILTRATION: Captures up to 90% of airborne particles such as dust, lint, pollen, pet hair, and mold spores to help keep your home’s air cleaner and fresher every day.
- ENHANCED AIRFLOW & EFFICIENCY: Electrostatically charged pleated media traps more particles while allowing smooth air flow. Reducing strain on your HVAC system for consistent performance and energy savings.
- LONG-LASTING, DURABLE DESIGN: Heavy-duty beverage board frame with moisture-resistant backing and reinforced pleats provides up to 3 months of reliable filtration. Outlasting traditional fiberglass filters.
- PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA: Manufactured using high-quality materials in American facilities to ensure dependable performance, sustainable production, and cleaner indoor air you can trust.
If you suspect a gas-supply interruption, do not adjust gas valves, attempt to relight equipment, or open the furnace based on general online instructions. The older manual discusses checking whether gas was shut off for safety reasons, but the correct procedure depends on the installed model. Follow its exact manufacturer instructions or contact a qualified HVAC professional.
If the furnace is blowing cool air
Inspect the filter and make sure supply and return grilles are open and unobstructed. A dirty filter or blocked grille can be relevant to airflow, but these observations do not establish the cause of cool air. If basic checks do not help, consult the model’s manual or call the servicing dealer rather than attempting internal diagnosis.

What a blinking status light means
There is no single Tempstar blink-code chart that applies to every furnace. The meaning depends on the exact model and its controls. Find the model number, then use that unit’s manual and service label or code legend.
If a status code is visible, record it before opening the blower access door or interrupting power. The older ICP/Tempstar manual gives this instruction: “NOTE: Record the LED status code BEFORE removing the blower access door or turning off 220-V power to the furnace.” The quoted voltage is specific to that manual and must not be assumed for every Tempstar model. Its code legend is described as being in the information booklet inside the main furnace door; use the location and instructions documented for your own unit.

Why model identification matters
Tempstar’s catalog groups gas furnaces into Ion, QuietComfort, and Performance series. Models vary in features and controls, so a symptom or light pattern cannot identify a failed part by itself. Check Tempstar’s gas-furnace catalog and locate the documentation for your model.
For example, Tempstar describes the F97CMN as an Ion 98 variable-speed modulating furnace, with a silicon nitride ignitor, high-temperature limit control, and compatibility with the Ion Black System Control. The N80MSN is described as a Performance 80 single-stage furnace, also listing a silicon nitride hot-surface igniter and high-temperature limit control. These are product-specific details, not instructions for diagnosing or repairing other models.

- Model number and series: Use these to find the matching manual and service information.
- Ignition and controls: Features differ among products; do not assume a procedure or code interpretation transfers between models.
- SmartSense: Remote dealer review of performance data, including fault codes, is available only on supported equipment and with the homeowner’s data-sharing and remote-access permission. Tempstar says it pairs with a SmartSense-enabled Ion Gray Smart Thermostat. See Tempstar SmartSense details.
When to stop troubleshooting and call for service
Call the servicing dealer if the model’s basic checks do not solve the problem, the code legend points to a service issue, or you are unsure what a check requires. Do not try to diagnose ignition, flame-sensing, gas-valve, pressure-switch, or safety-control failures from a brand-level article.
The older ICP/Tempstar manual says a rollout switch may shut down the furnace after a high-temperature condition. If a rollout switch trips a second time, it directs the reader to turn off the furnace and call for service. Do not reset or bypass a safety switch. Tempstar advises customers seeking purchase or installation help to use its Dealer Locator to find an expert in their area.
