The best bedding flowers for your landscape are the ones suited to your bed’s light, soil, drainage, and local growing season. Annuals offer flexible seasonal color; perennials and bulbs can build a longer-lived planting. Before buying seed or transplants, check the site and plan for bloom time, mature size, spacing, and upkeep.
What counts as a bedding flower?
“Bedding plants” can mean annuals, biennials, perennials, or bulbs—not just annual flowers. They are useful for quick color while trees and shrubs mature, filling gaps in established planting, or adding interest near an entry, patio, or other hardscape. Choose the life cycle that matches how often you want to renew the bed.
How much sun does your flower bed get?
Observe the bed over the day before selecting plants. Note hours of direct sun, afternoon exposure, whether shade is partial or heavy, and whether the soil drains freely or stays wet. Virginia Cooperative Extension identifies light, temperature, soil, and drainage as key selection factors; a mismatch can mean poor flowering or plant stress (Virginia Cooperative Extension).
Alabama Cooperative Extension’s 2019 guide uses at least six hours of direct sun as a practical full-sun guide and four hours or less—preferably in the morning—as its guide for shade. These are regional recommendations, not universal definitions; check plant labels and local advice. The same guide notes that most bedding plants need well-drained soil (Alabama Cooperative Extension System).

For shady or tree-rooted beds
Shade under trees may also be dry because roots compete for water. Iowa State University Extension recommends watering when the soil is dry and using organic mulch to conserve moisture and help suppress weeds. Its shade-plant examples include black snakeroot and doll’s eyes, but confirm suitability for your region before choosing a species (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach).
For hot or exposed sites
Use locally adapted plants where summers are hot. UF/IFAS gives zinnia as an example of a heat-loving annual and notes that coastal gardens may need plants tolerant of wind and salt. These are Florida-specific considerations, not a nationwide ranking (UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions).
Annuals, perennials, and bulbs: which fits your plan?
Annuals complete their life cycle in one growing season and are suited to a display you can change or renew. Perennials live longer than one season, while bulbs can provide a distinct seasonal layer. Combining categories can give a bed both continuity and seasonal variety; the right balance depends on how much replanting and maintenance you want (UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions).

Seeds can be a practical way to cover a larger area. Depending on the flower, you may sow directly in the bed or start seed indoors or in a protected place and transplant later. Follow the current cultivar’s instructions for sowing and timing; Purdue Extension’s annual-flower guide describes both approaches (Purdue Extension).
Nursery plants are commonly sold in cell packs and individual pots. Illinois Extension notes that cell packs suit beds needing many plants, while larger individual plants can help finish a small space sooner (Illinois Extension).

Choose compact, healthy seedlings rather than tall, spindly ones. Before planting purchased seedlings outdoors, harden them off: Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises beginning in a shady, protected spot and gradually increasing sun exposure over 7 to 10 days. Protect plants from severe weather and frost during the process; after 7 to 10 days of hardening, the bedding plants should be ready for planting (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach).
How to lay out and prepare the bed
- Sketch the planting area. Consider the bed’s scale and dimensions, then arrange colors and forms on paper. A UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener article recommends outlining the proposed shape with a garden hose to judge its scale in place (UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners).
- Clear and assess the soil. Remove weeds and existing vegetation, and check whether water drains or remains pooled. Improve soil where appropriate; Alabama Extension recommends adding organic matter to heavy or persistently wet soil (Alabama Cooperative Extension System).
- Set plants at their recommended spacing. Account for mature height and spread so the bed has room to fill in without crowding. Use the spacing for the selected species or cultivar rather than planting by appearance alone.
- Transplant carefully. Water containers first, loosen roots gently, and set each plant at the depth appropriate for that species. Mulch after planting to help retain moisture and reduce weeds (UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions).
Use soil-test recommendations to decide whether fertilizer or lime is needed instead of applying either by guesswork. Alabama Extension gives one inch of water per week as a general guideline for annual beds, but actual needs vary with weather, soil, drainage, exposure, and plant growth; treat it as a starting reference, not a fixed schedule (Alabama Cooperative Extension System).
When to plant and how to maintain the display
For most annual flowers, wait until the local danger of frost has passed before planting outdoors. Iowa State Extension identifies pansy, sweet alyssum, and snapdragon as frost-tolerant annuals that may be planted earlier, though local climate and variety still matter. Planting on a cloudy day or in the evening can reduce stress from immediate strong sun (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach).

In colder weather, tender annuals can be damaged by cold. Deadheading—removing spent flowers—can benefit some annuals, while others continue flowering without it. Check care instructions for the chosen plant. For precise species, timing, and maintenance recommendations, consult your county extension service or a trusted local nursery.
