There is no single set of dimensions or construction method for a wooden tape dispenser: a compact holder for standard 2-inch tape, a wall-mounted shop dispenser, and a tape-and-paper-clip organizer are different projects. Choose a plan for the tape and workspace you have, then follow that plan’s dimensions rather than combining parts from several designs.

For a multi-roll or jumbo design, Popular Woodworking’s project says almost all regular-size rolls have a 3-inch center hole. That is a claim in that project’s context, not a guarantee that every roll will fit a particular dispenser. See the Popular Woodworking jumbo-dispenser project.
What to check before you start
Confirm the roll and mounting arrangement
- Measure the tape roll’s width and center hole, and check how much clearance the chosen plan gives it. Do not assume a holder for standard 2-inch tape will fit a wider roll or a different core.
- Decide whether you need a portable tabletop holder, a wall-mounted station, or an organizer with extra storage. The Dremel project describes wall mounting; the Purdue plan includes paper-clip storage.
- Check the plan’s cutter and axle details. The Dremel and WOOD Store projects specify a hacksaw blade, while the Dremel plan also uses a rod and mounts. These are design-specific parts, not interchangeable specifications.
Gather only the materials for the selected plan
Newton Makes lists scrap wood as suitable and includes a jig saw, drum sander, table saw, planer, chisels, lathe, wood-turning tools, steel dowel pins, packing tape, and double-sided tape among its project tools and materials. Its plan is the one to consult for the compact design’s measurements and templates.
The Purdue combined dispenser calls for wood, a dowel, glue, and brads, along with a coping or jig saw, drill and bit, hammer, and nail set. For the Dremel design, verify the metal rod and mount dimensions against the project before cutting or purchasing parts; the rendered 1.25-inch rod diameter is unusual enough to warrant checking the source rather than treating it as a dependable general specification.

Build to the chosen plan, not a hybrid
The plans differ in size, mounting, and function, so there is no reliable universal cut list. For a compact dispenser, use the Newton Makes templates and dimensions. For the wall-mounted Dremel project, follow its sequence for the wood assembly, blade, metal plate, mounting, and rod. The WOOD Store listing provides a full-size pattern for its shop helper. The Purdue plan is the appropriate route if paper-clip storage is part of the design.
Keep the cutter securely attached and positioned as shown in the specific plan. Before loading tape, check that the roll turns freely and that the dispenser is stable in its intended location. If you change the plan’s dimensions or hardware, recheck roll clearance and cutter placement rather than assuming the original pattern will still work.

Work safely around saws and the cutter
The Dremel project gives this warning: “To reduce the risk of injury user must read instruction manuals for all tools used in this project. Wear eye and respiratory protection. Use clamps to support work piece whenever practical.” Follow the instructions for your own tools, secure work while cutting or drilling, and handle the hacksaw blade carefully during installation and use.
