WOOD Magazine’s Super-Flexible Shop Storage plan describes a workshop wall system built around interlocking hanging cleats, with movable storage modules for clamps, hand tools and supplies. It includes three wall-cabinet depths and options for clear acrylic or hardboard doors. The plan was featured in WOOD Issue 152 (November 2003); the publisher’s plan page was updated January 16, 2024. See WOOD Magazine’s plan description.
What the plan includes
The arrangement is presented as an Idea Shop 5 workshop system. Its interlocking hanging cleats are intended to let separate storage modules be added or rearranged on the wall, rather than fixing every storage piece into a single permanent layout.
- Racks for bar clamps and pipe clamps.
- A perforated hardboard panel for hand tools.
- Wall cabinets with clear acrylic or hardboard doors.
WOOD describes the cabinet designs as sharing identical construction details, despite their different depths.
Cabinet sizes and intended uses
| Cabinet depth | Purpose stated by WOOD |
|---|---|
| 12¼ inches | General storage |
| 8¾ inches | Hardware |
| 7½ inches | Tools |
These are the depths named in the plan description; it does not establish how much weight a cabinet or cleat can carry.

Plan formats and what is included
The official WOOD Store lists a downloadable version, while Woodcraft lists a paper-plan version. Woodcraft explicitly says materials are not included. The available listing descriptions do not establish that either format supplies lumber, hardware, acrylic, hardboard or other construction materials; check the listing and the plan itself for current terms and the complete bill of materials.
Check the downloadable plan at the WOOD Store or check Woodcraft’s paper-plan listing. Availability and purchase terms may change.
Important correction for the hardware cabinet
WOOD Magazine published a correction for the Issue 152 plan: place the top three storage-bin mounting brackets in the hardware cabinet 4¼ inches apart, as shown in Drawing 9. Use that corrected spacing when following the plan. Read WOOD’s correction.

The online descriptions do not provide the full drawings, cut list, hardware requirements or build sequence. They also do not establish a wall-attachment method, required fasteners, installation procedure or load ratings. Consult the actual plan for construction details, and determine an appropriate wall attachment for the structure and intended use rather than assuming the cleat system has a particular capacity.
