For a garden waterfall effect, plant trailers where they can spill over an edge: a raised planter, hanging basket, retaining wall, or terrace. Choose by the spot’s light, moisture, and frost conditions—not by appearance alone. Flowering annuals bring seasonal color; foliage trailers can add texture, and some groundcovers may persist and spread.

Choose plants for the edge and the site

A cascading display works when trailing stems have room to hang down. In a mixed container, place upright plants toward the center or back, mounding plants between them, and spillers at the rim. Group plants with similar light and water needs so one part of the arrangement is not stressed while another thrives.

There is no single best cascading plant for every garden. The options below differ in flower, foliage, sun tolerance, moisture preference, frost sensitivity, and tendency to spread. Confirm cultivar availability and local suitability before buying.

Plant Best effect and placement Light and moisture Seasonality and spread
Calibrachoa, ivy-leaved pelargonium, lobelia, Surfinia petunia, trailing verbena Flowering spillers for summer containers and baskets; lobelia includes the Cascade Series Summer bedding is often suited to sun, though some choices tolerate light shade; check the cultivar and site Seasonal summer bedding; frost timing and local availability matter
Trailing nasturtium Flowers and foliage spilling from sunny tubs, baskets, walls, or terraces Prefers a sunny position Annual; plant outdoors after frost danger has passed
Ornamental sweet potato vine Bold foliage in containers and hanging baskets; cultivars include lime, purple-black, bronze, burgundy, and multicolored leaves Full sun to part shade; moderate water Most cultivars trail, though some newer ones mound or climb. Not cold-hardy in most settings and usually grown as an annual
Golden creeping Jenny (‘Aurea’) Foliage spilling from containers or cascading over a wall or bank Moist soil and regular watering; foliage tends toward chartreuse in shade and gold in brighter conditions Can persist and spread; may crowd other short plants

The Royal Horticultural Society lists calibrachoa, ivy-leaved pelargoniums, lobelia, Surfinia petunias, and trailing verbena among summer container choices: RHS container planting guidance. For nasturtiums, the RHS advises choosing a sunny spot and waiting until frost danger has passed before planting outdoors: RHS nasturtium growing guide.

Match the spiller to the setting

Sunny containers and walls

Trailing nasturtiums suit a sunny tub or basket and can cascade down a wall or terrace. They are a straightforward choice when you want flowers and an informal look, but do not plant them out until local frost danger has passed. For a more densely flowering summer display, consider calibrachoa, ivy-leaved pelargonium, lobelia, Surfinia petunia, or trailing verbena, checking the plant label for light and care requirements.

Colorful foliage in baskets and pots

Ornamental sweet potato vine is grown for its foliage rather than a flower-heavy display. Clemson Extension describes it as a container “spiller, cascading down the sides” and lists lime, purple-black, bronze, burgundy, and multicolored foliage among the available effects. Most cultivars trail, but some newer selections mound or climb, so check the named variety if a hanging habit is essential. It tolerates full sun to part shade and moderate water. It is not cold-hardy in most settings and is usually treated as an annual; Clemson notes that overwintering may be possible in South Carolina’s coastal zone 9, which should not be taken as a recommendation for other regions. Clemson Extension’s ornamental sweet potato vine guide gives further cultivar and propagation details.

Moist walls, banks, and container edges

Golden creeping Jenny can trail from a container or cover the edge of a wall or bank. Its foliage looks more chartreuse in shade and more golden in brighter conditions, but it prefers moist soil and regular watering. Because it can crowd other low-growing plants, give it room or use it where its spread can be contained. Check local guidance on invasiveness or escape risk before planting groundcovers near natural areas. The RHS profile for Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’ describes the plant and its growing conditions.

North-facing or shaded retaining walls

A north-facing wall may receive less direct sun, so choose from plants suited to the actual light at the planting level rather than assuming a sunny-bedding plant will thrive there. The RHS lists some summer container options for light shade, but suitability varies by plant and cultivar. Observe how much direct and reflected light the wall receives, and check the plant label before using it as a spiller. No single plant recommendation can be made for all north-facing walls because climate, shade, and moisture differ from site to site.

Set up containers and wall planters for healthy growth

  • Provide drainage. Use a container with drainage holes and enough volume for the plants’ rootballs. Do not leave roots standing in excess water.
  • Use a free-draining mix. Oregon State University Extension recommends a well-draining all-purpose potting mix containing perlite or vermiculite.
  • Plan for the growing habit. Position trailers at the edge, with upright plants in the center or back and mounding plants between. Leave enough room for each plant rather than packing the rootballs tightly.
  • Check frost dates. For summer bedding and other frost-sensitive choices, wait until local frost risk has passed before planting outdoors. Hardiness and timing depend on your location.

Water according to the pot, weather, and plant

Containers can dry quickly, especially in hot, bright, or windy conditions, but a fixed watering calendar is unreliable. North Carolina State Extension identifies wind, light, temperature, humidity, container size and type, growing medium, plant type, and growth stage as factors that affect watering. Check the soil itself and adjust as conditions change.

  1. Feel the potting mix before watering. Oregon State Extension offers a practical starting point: water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry.
  2. When watering is needed, water thoroughly rather than giving only a light surface sprinkle.
  3. Check again more often during hot or windy weather, and less often when conditions are cool or damp. Avoid leaving the container in excess water.

This soil check is a starting point, not a universal schedule; the plant’s moisture preference and the container’s drainage also matter. If daily watering is difficult, the RHS suggests considering drought-resistant choices for summer bedding. NC State Extension’s container-watering guidance and Oregon State Extension’s container basics explain the relevant variables and watering approach.

Make the choice fit your garden

  • For a seasonal flower display in a sunny basket, compare trailing nasturtium with the RHS-listed summer bedding options.
  • For foliage contrast in a pot or hanging basket, look at ornamental sweet potato vine cultivars and verify that the selected variety trails.
  • For a moist wall or bank, golden creeping Jenny can provide a foliage cascade, but allow for its tendency to crowd nearby short plants.
  • For any site, confirm local frost timing, hardiness, light exposure, and water needs before planting.
