Stung in the Garden? What to Do Now—and When to Get Emergency Help

Move away, remove any visible stinger without squeezing, wash and cool the area, and know which symptoms need emergency help.

Move away from the insects first. For a likely bee, wasp, or hornet sting, remove any visible stinger without squeezing it, wash the area, and apply a wrapped cold pack. Trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, faintness, or other serious symptoms may signal anaphylaxis: use prescribed epinephrine and call your local emergency number immediately.

What to do immediately after a garden sting

  1. Get to safety. Walk away from the insects. If several are active or you are surrounded, cover your mouth and nose and move quickly into a building or closed vehicle. Mayo Clinic advises moving away from the area.
  2. Remove a visible stinger promptly. Brush or scrape it sideways with a fingernail or the edge of a card, or wipe it away with gauze. Do not squeeze the stinger, and do not dig into the skin to look for one. Wasps and hornets may not leave a stinger. See NHS guidance and CDC/NIOSH first-aid guidance.
  3. Wash and cool the area. Clean it with soap and water, then apply a cold damp cloth or a wrapped ice pack for about 10–20 minutes. Repeat as needed. If the sting is on an arm or leg, elevate it if practical. Remove nearby rings before swelling makes them difficult to take off.
  4. Leave it alone. Avoid scratching, which can further irritate the skin.

Is it a local reaction or an emergency?

Pain, itching, a welt, and swelling close to the sting are common local symptoms. The more important distinction is whether symptoms stay near the sting or suggest a body-wide allergic reaction.

What you notice What to do
Pain, itching, a welt, or swelling limited to the sting area Use local first-aid measures and monitor how symptoms develop.
Trouble breathing; swelling of the lips, face, eyelids, or throat; dizziness, fainting, or unconsciousness; a weak, rapid pulse; or symptoms such as hives, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea Suspect anaphylaxis. Use a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector as directed and call your local emergency number immediately.

A severe allergic reaction can be an emergency even if only one or two warning signs appear. Do not wait to see whether a cream, antihistamine, or cold pack helps. These are not substitutes for epinephrine and emergency care. For more on warning signs, see Mayo Clinic’s bee-sting guidance.

While waiting for emergency help

Follow the auto-injector instructions and the dispatcher’s directions. NHS guidance says to lie down and raise the legs if appropriate; change position if breathing is difficult or the person is pregnant. Do not make someone with possible anaphylaxis walk around. If symptoms have not improved after five minutes, the NHS advises using a second injector if one is available; follow the device instructions and local emergency guidance. See NHS anaphylaxis guidance.

Relief for a mild sting

For itching or swelling limited to the sting area, Mayo Clinic lists calamine or hydrocortisone cream and an oral antihistamine as options. A nonprescription pain reliever may help with pain. Follow product directions and any individual medical advice. These measures are for symptom relief, not treatment of anaphylaxis. The NHS also lists pain relievers, antihistamines, and hydrocortisone and advises against baking soda home remedies.

How long a sting may last—and when to contact a clinician

A mild sting often causes immediate sharp pain, a welt, and swelling that settles within hours. A larger local reaction can worsen over the next day or two and last up to seven days, according to Mayo Clinic.

Contact a clinician if symptoms do not improve, swelling is getting worse, infection is suspected, you feel unwell, or you have had an allergic response. Multiple stings can cause more serious illness. Mayo Clinic advises immediate care after multiple stings in children, older adults, and people with heart or breathing problems.

How to reduce the chance of another sting

  • Wear closed-toe shoes and avoid walking through flowers.
  • Take care when mowing or trimming vegetation, where insects may be disturbed.
  • Avoid perfumes and bright floral clothing when working outdoors.
  • If a few bees are nearby, stay calm and walk away slowly rather than swatting.
  • If insects become active around you, leave; if you are stung or surrounded by many, cover your mouth and nose and get to a building or closed vehicle.
  • Do not approach or disturb a nest. Have it dealt with only if that can be done safely.

If you have had a severe sting reaction, discuss future risk with a health professional or allergy specialist. Mayo Clinic describes referral for allergy testing and possible venom immunotherapy after severe reactions or multiple stings. It reports that people who have a severe reaction to a bee sting have, on average, a 50% chance of anaphylaxis the next time they are stung; that figure applies to the severe-reaction group described by Mayo Clinic, not to everyone who has been stung. See Mayo Clinic’s bee-sting page.
