It can steady tall stock from the side and behind for cuts such as tenons, provided the fence is square to the table and the saddle fits snugly while still sliding freely.
What a rip-fence saddle does
The saddle rides over the top edge of a wooden auxiliary fence secured to the metal rip fence. That raised track lets the saddle support a workpiece beside and behind the blade area. WOOD Magazine describes using the jig for machining and joinery, including bevel-cutting pergola post caps and supporting stiles. Its tenon-cutting guidance focuses on supporting tall stock from the side and behind. WOOD Magazine’s tenon-cutting instructions.
Fit the auxiliary fence and saddle
Fit the jig to your own saw rather than assuming a universal fence size. In WOOD Magazine’s project example, the wooden auxiliary fence is screwed securely to the metal rip fence, with its top edge 1 inch above the metal fence’s top edge. The auxiliary fence should be at 90 degrees to the saw table. Size the wood so the saddle travels along its top edge smoothly, without free play. WOOD Magazine’s rip-fence saddle project.
- Check that the auxiliary fence is square to the table before fitting the saddle.
- Test the saddle’s travel along the full usable length of the fence; it should glide without rocking or binding.
- If sliding is rough, WOOD Magazine suggests waxing the mating pieces. For tenon work, it specifically recommends paste wax on the saddle’s inside surface where it contacts the fence.
Use the saddle to support tenon stock
Clamp the workpiece to the saddle so the jig supports it from the side and behind, then guide the assembly through the cut. The clamp and saddle should hold the workpiece securely; the saddle is a support, not a substitute for a stable setup or safe operating practice. WOOD Magazine’s tablesaw safety guidance advises clearing the tabletop before cutting, keeping hands away from the blade, and using a pushstick when needed. It cautions against using the rip fence and miter gauge together for through cuts; that warning is specifically about through-cut setups.
