Yes—Switzerland has real homes that look remarkably like Hobbit holes. The earth houses designed by Swiss architect Peter Vetsch are purpose-built residences integrated into hillsides, with rounded, earth-covered roofs and broad glazed façades. The Earth House Estate in Dietikon is a notable example, but these are private homes, not public attractions or fantasy-themed burrows.
What makes a Swiss earth house look like a Hobbit hole?
The resemblance comes from the houses’ low, curved profiles and roofs covered with earth, which make the buildings appear to emerge from the landscape. Vetsch Architektur describes its approach as designing homes to live with the earth and site, rather than placing a conventional house on top of the land. Broad glazed façades bring daylight into the interiors, balancing the sheltered, hill-like exterior.
These are designed residences, not improvised underground shelters. The practice says each project is planned around its site and owners’ wishes, with modern interiors, kitchens and bathrooms. Its portfolio includes individual houses as well as housing estates. Peter Vetsch’s practice biography says he has realised more than 90 earth houses in Switzerland and elsewhere; another practice page gives a total of 100, without explaining the difference, so an exact reconciled count is not established.
How are Vetsch’s earth houses designed to work?
Vetsch Architektur describes compact vaulted forms and a substantial covering of earth. The firm says the earth layer can shield a home from weather and temperature swings, while the compact shape can moderate heat loss. It also describes energy-saving benefits and says its houses meet the high requirements of the Swiss Minergie standard. Those are the architect’s claims: independently measured savings and project-specific certification records for the Dietikon homes are not established here.

“Earth house” describes a relationship to the landscape, not one universal construction recipe. Earth-covered architecture should not be confused with rammed-earth walls or newer hybrid timber-and-earth systems. ETH Zurich’s Department of Architecture, in a 2 March 2026 interview with architect and professor Roger Boltshauser, discusses rammed earth, liquid earth and hybrid construction as distinct approaches. Boltshauser also describes challenges such as labour-intensive production and the difficulty of standardising mixtures when excavated soils vary; those broader issues should not be assumed to apply identically to every Vetsch project.
What is the Earth House Estate in Dietikon?
Dietikon’s Earth House Estate is a concrete example of the style. A listing by Nobilis Estate describes an earth-house area at the foot of the Heitersberg, with a lake among the properties. It gives details for one house, not the entire estate:

| Listing detail | What it says about the individual house |
|---|---|
| Construction and renovation | Built in 1993; renovated in 2022 |
| Rooms | 7.5 |
| Area | Approximately 261.7 m² living area and 91.8 m² usable area |
| Listed features | Air-water heat pump with floor heating, terraces, ponds and a roof garden |
| Current listing status | The page says “Property closed!”; price and availability are “on request” |
These figures and features describe the listed home alone; they should not be read as specifications for every house on the estate. The closed listing is not evidence of an active sale. No estate-wide public visiting policy is established, so treat the houses as private property and do not enter without permission.

Vetsch’s earth-covered homes are one strand of a broader field. ETH Zurich’s 2026 discussion concerns earth construction generally, including material research and hybrid systems. Boltshauser said that in the Canton of Zurich, imports of building materials and exports of earth-rich excavated material are each on the scale of millions of tonnes. In the interview, the current market share for earth construction is described as “optimistically” around one percent; growth to two to five percent within ten years and perhaps 10 to 20 percent later is presented as an aspiration, not a certain forecast. These figures provide context for the wider sector, not statistics about Vetsch’s houses.
